Objective: In our experimental study, we evaluated the influence of treatment with atorvastatin on the antioxidant activity of intracellular and extracellular systems factors, homocysteine levels (Hcy), and lipid profiles in obese and diabetic rats.

Method: Twenty-one male Wistar rats, aged 6 months, 450-550 g, were allocated into three groups. From the beginning of the study, the first group (G-I, control) received only standard food, while the second and third groups (G II-obese, G III-diabetic) were administered a high-fat diet (HFD) with 2% cholesterol.

Background/objectives: Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have demonstrated similar effectiveness and safety profiles to vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) in treating nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF). Given their favorable pharmacological profile, including the rapid onset and offset of action, fixed dosing, and predictable pharmacokinetics with a consistent dose-response relationship, reducing the need for frequent blood tests, researchers have investigated the potential of NOACs in patients with AF and valvular heart disease (VHD).

Methods: Clinical trials, excluding patients with mechanical prosthetic valves or moderate/severe mitral stenosis, have shown the benefits of NOACs over VKAs in this population.

Background: Mitral annulus calcification is a chronic degenerative condition affecting the fibrous base of the mitral valve. Historically viewed as an age-related phenomenon, recent studies suggest it is driven by active mechanisms involving systemic inflammation, hemodynamic stress, abnormal calcium-phosphorus metabolism, and lipid accumulation. Despite often being asymptomatic and incidentally detected, its clinical relevance stems from its strong association with increased cardiovascular disease risk, higher cardiovascular mortality, and elevated overall mortality.

Introduction: The bone marrow microenvironment (BME) is critical for healthy hematopoiesis and is often disrupted in hematologic malignancies. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are a major cell type in the tumor microenvironment (TME) and play a significant role in tumor growth and progression. Targeting TAMs and modulating their polarization is a promising strategy for cancer therapy.

Given the continuous changes in the world, with an increasing trend of unhealthy lifestyles, metabolic comorbidities, and increased susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), researchers change their attention to improve not only the therapeutic platform but also current CVD predictive and prognostic tools to improve disease outcomes. As CVD is characterized by an inflammatory paradigm involving, to some degree, the innate and adaptative immune systems, the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) emerged as a potential low-cost, rapidly available, and reliable inflammatory marker, with substantial recent evidence showing its potential utility in clinical practice. Thus, in this literature review, we will present an up-to-date discussion of the prognostic role of NLR in the most frequent CVDs, such as acute and chronic coronary disease, atherosclerotic disease, heart failure, cardiac valvopathies, and cardiac arrhythmias with predilection to atrial fibrillation.

This article aims to analyze the relationship between non-obstructive coronary artery disease (NOCAD) and atrial fibrillation (AF), exploring the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms and implications for clinical management. NOCAD and AF are prevalent cardiovascular conditions that often coexist, yet their interrelation is not well understood. NOCAD can lead to ischemic necrosis of cardiomyocytes and their replacement with fibrous tissue, sustaining focal ectopic activity in atrial myocardium.

Introduction: Literature data present new studies about precancerous lesions of pelvic serous carcinoma that originate from the tubal secretory cells. It has long been thought that ovarian cancer cannot be prevented by prophylactic screening or surgery. In recent years, gynecologists have adapted to new principles and so, during routine hysterectomies in perimenopausal women for benign uterine pathologies, salpingo-oophorectomy is performed as a prophylactic approach.

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), comprising leucine (Leu), isoleucine (Ile), and valine (Val), are essential nutrients vital for protein synthesis and metabolic regulation via specialized signaling networks. Their association with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) has become a focal point of scientific debate, with emerging evidence suggesting both beneficial and detrimental roles. This review aims to dissect the multifaceted relationship between BCAAs and cardiovascular health, exploring the molecular mechanisms and clinical implications.

Landiolol is an ultra-short-acting, selective β1-adrenergic receptor blocker that was originally approved in Japan for the treatment of intraoperative tachyarrhythmias. It has gained attention for its use in the management of tachyarrhythmias and perioperative tachycardia, especially atrial fibrillation for both cardiac and non-cardiac surgeries. It can be the ideal agent for heart rate control due to its high β1-selectivity, potent negative chronotropic effect, a limited negative inotropic potential, and an ultrashort elimination half-life (around 4 min); moreover, it may have a potential therapeutic effects for sepsis and pediatric patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Ocular melanoma is a rare and complex disease, and this 28-year retrospective study focused on uveal and conjunctival melanomas treated at a specific hospital in Romania.
  • The study aimed to summarize the epidemiological and pathological characteristics of these cancers in the Northeastern region and found no gender preference among affected patients.
  • The most common types of ocular melanomas identified were heavily pigmented spindle cell and epithelioid subtypes, and patients generally sought treatment before the disease spread systemically.

A right heart tumor can be identified by transthoracic echocardiography during a routine examination or due to cardiac symptoms. The first step is the assessment by echocardiography, with its multiple techniques, and the obtained information must be judged in a clinical and biological context. The second step comprises one, sometimes even two, of the more complex modality imaging methods.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) still holds the title as one of the most debilitating chronic diseases with rising prevalence and incidence, including its complications such as retinal, renal, and peripheral nerve disease. In order to develop novel molecules for diagnosis and treatment, a deep understanding of the complex molecular pathways is imperative. Currently, the existing agents for T2DM treatment target only blood glucose levels.

Thromboembolic (TE) risk scores used for atrial fibrillation (AF) patients do not include mitral annular calcification (MAC) as a potential indicator of vascular disease. This research evaluated the correlation between MAC and TE risk scores (CHADS and CHADS-VASc). We compared TE risk score values and clinical and echocardiographic data in patients with and without MAC.

Article Synopsis
  • - Atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia in patients with chronic coronary syndrome, and it can worsen coronary ischemia by increasing the heart's oxygen demand while accelerating atherosclerosis.
  • - Chronic coronary syndrome negatively impacts gap junction proteins that are crucial for heart function, leading to tissue damage and irregular heart rhythms.
  • - Controlling shared risk factors like hypertension and diabetes, alongside managing treatments such as medications and interventional approaches, is essential for improving patient outcomes and breaking the cycle of atrial fibrillation and coronary ischemia.

The pathologic triangle formed by chronic heart failure (HF), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and anemia carries high morbidity and mortality rates and decreases quality of life. Anemia represents a common condition in patients with advanced HF and CKD, with a total prevalence in cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) ranging from 5% to 55%. Searching for a pragmatic approach for these patients with guided and disease-specific recommendations beyond just targeted hemoglobin therapeutic behavior represents the core of research for ongoing clinical trials.
