Two-year randomized clinical trial of enamel matrix derivative treated infrabony defects: radiographic analysis.

Background: This split-mouth, double-blind randomized controlled trial evaluated radiographic changes in infrabony defects treated with open flap debridement (OFD) or OFD associated with enamel matrix derivative (EMD) after a 24-month follow-up. The radiographic distance from the CEJ to the bottom of the defect (BD) was considered the primary outcome. CEJ-BC and defect angle were secondary outcomes.

Predictors of tooth loss during long-term periodontal maintenance: a systematic review of observational studies.

Objective: To systematically assess the factors influencing tooth loss during long-term periodontal maintenance (PM).

Methods: CENTRAL, MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched up to and including September 2009. Studies limited to patients with periodontitis who underwent periodontal therapy and followed a maintenance care programme for the at least 5 years were eligible for inclusion in this review.

The influence of tobacco smoking on the outcomes achieved by root-coverage procedures: a systematic review.

Background: The authors conducted a systematic review to evaluate the effect of smoking on the clinical outcomes achieved by periodontal plastic surgery procedures in the treatment of recession-type defects.

Types Of Studies Reviewed: The authors performed an electronic search on MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) for randomized controlled clinical trials, controlled clinical trials and case series that involved at least six months' follow-up. They looked for studies published through June 2008 that compared the outcome measures achieved by smokers and nonsmokers after they underwent periodontal plastic surgery procedures for treatment of gingival recession.

Can subepithelial connective tissue grafts be considered the gold standard procedure in the treatment of Miller Class I and II recession-type defects?

Objectives: The objective of this systematic review was to answer the following question: 'Can subepithelial connective tissue grafts (SCTG) be considered the gold standard procedure in the treatment of recession-type defects?' DATA AND SOURCE: An electronic search (MEDLIINE, EMBASE and CENTRAL) for randomized controlled clinical trials with at least 6 months' follow-up comparing SCTG with other procedures for the treatment of gingival recession was performed up to December 2007.

Study Selection: To be eligible to this review patients had to present a diagnosis of gingival recession with the following characteristics: (a) recession areas selected for treatment classified as Miller [Miller Jr PD. A classification of marginal tissue recession.

Effect of enamel matrix proteins on the treatment of intrabony defects: a split-mouth randomized controlled trial study.

The objective of this split-mouth, double-blind, randomized controlled trial was to compare the clinical effect of treatment of 2- or 3-wall intrabony defects with open flap debridement (OFD) combined or not with enamel matrix proteins (EMP). Thirteen volunteers were selected with one pair of or more intrabony defects and probing pocket depth (PPD) > or = 5 mm. All individuals received instructions regarding oral hygiene and were submitted to scaling and root planing.
