Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the incidence of venous thromboembolic events (VTE) after total hip arthroplasty (THA) in an Asian population without using chemical prophylaxis.
  • Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of 542 Hong Kong Chinese patients, employing mechanical methods like pneumatic compression and compression stockings, along with a fast-track rehab approach.
  • Findings showed a low incidence of VTE (1.1%), indicating that mechanical prophylaxis alone is a safe option for standard-risk Asian patients undergoing THA.

Objectives: Cases of injury on duty (IOD) are common in Hong Kong, but literature on this group of patients is limited. This study aims to describe local IOD cases' epidemiological characteristics and identify factors affecting return to work (RTW) outcomes.

Methods: This is a retrospective epidemiological study of IOD patients in the orthopedic and traumatology center of Yan Chai Hospital in 2016, using the hospital's electronic clinical record analysis and reporting system; 323 out of the 10 730 patients (M:F = 206:117; mean age 46.

Medicine regulators require the melting points for crystalline drugs, as they are a test for chemical and physical quality. Many drugs, especially salt-forms, suffer concomitant degradation during melting; thus, it would be useful to know if the endotherm associated with melt degradation may be used for characterising the crystallinity of a powder blend. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether melt-degradation transitions can detect amorphous content in a blend of crystalline and amorphous salbutamol sulphate.

Background: Recent studies have reported the occurrence of medial tibial bone resorption following total knee replacement. One study proposed that a thick tibial tray results in stress shielding and increases the risk of bone resorption, but its findings were based on subjective radiological assessment. This study aimed to verify this hypothesis and to objectively quantify medial tibial bone density by using serial measurements with digital radiological densitometry.

Radiation-induced morphea (RIM) of the breast is a rare complication of radiotherapy. It is disfiguring, painful and defeats the purpose of achieving a good cosmesis in breast-conservation surgery. This report describes a severe case of RIM in a breast cancer patient together with photographic illustrations of the serial changes over time and histopathology slides.
