Gases and dissolved black carbon (DBC) formed during pyrolysis of nitrogen-rich feedstock would affect atmospheric and aquatic environments. Yet, the mechanisms driving biomass gas evolution and DBC formation are poorly understood. Using thermogravimetric-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, we correlated the temperature-dependent primary noncondensable gas release sequence (HO → CO → HCN, NH → CH → CO) with specific defunctionalization stages in the order: dehydration, decarboxylation, denitrogenation, demethylation, and decarbonylation.

This study proposes a novel strategy that utilizes biochar (BC) during anaerobic fermentation (AF) to generate amino acids (AAs) toward nitrogen upcycling. The BC, pyrolyzed at 800 °C (BC800) to enhance graphite structures and electron-accepting sites, effectively addresses issues related to biosynthetic reducing power nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate insufficiency by altering cellular conditions and alleviates feedback inhibition through the immobilization of end products. This process establishes unique microbial signaling and energy networks, with becoming dominant in the biofilm.

Catalytic oxidation through the transfer of lattice oxygen from metal oxides to reactants, namely the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism, has been widely reported. In this study, we evidence the overlooked oxidation route that features the in situ formation of surface OH species on Cu catalysts and its selective addition to the reactant carbonyl group. We observed that glucose oxidation to gluconic acid in air (21% O) was favored on low-valence Cu sites according to X-ray spectroscopic analyses.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes how climate change, particularly heavy rainfall, affects the stability of biochar in soil, examining both its soluble and solid phases.
  • Results show that low-temperature biochar (450 °C) experiences significant molecular changes, leading to a reduction in carbon stability due to the oxidation of alkyl groups and fragmentation of bonds, resulting in the release of organic carbon.
  • In contrast, high-temperature biochar (750 °C) exhibits less dramatic changes and maintains stability, although its carbon can still degrade due to oxidative processes influenced by environmental conditions.

Pyrogenic carbon is considered an enhancer to H-yielding dark fermentation (DF), but little is known about how it regulates extracellular electron transfer (EET) and influences transmembrane respiratory chains and intracellular metabolisms. This study addressed these knowledge gaps and demonstrated that wood waste pyrogenic carbon (biochar) could significantly improve the DF performance; e.g.

Clay minerals are ubiquitous in subsurface environments and have long been recognized as having a limited or negligible impact on the fate of arsenic (As) due to their negatively charged surfaces. Here, we demonstrate the significant role of kaolinite (Kln), a pervasive clay mineral, in enhancing As(V) immobilization during ferrous iron (Fe(II)) oxidation at near-neutral pH. Our results showed that Fe(II) oxidation alone was not capable of immobilizing As(V) at relatively low Fe/As molar ratios (≤2) due to the generation of Fe(III)-As(V) nanocolloids that could still migrate easily as truly dissolved As did.

The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic exacerbated barriers to care for people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PLWH). The quick uptake of telemedicine in the outpatient setting provided promise for care continuity. In this study, we compared appointment and laboratory no-show rates in an urban outpatient HIV clinic during three time periods: (1) Pre-COVID-19: 9/15/2019-3/14/2020 (predominately in-person), (2) "Early" COVID-19: 3/15/2020-9/14/2020 (predominately telemedicine), and (3) "Later" COVID-19: 9/15/2020-3/14/2021 (mixed in-person/telemedicine).

Food waste anaerobic digestion requires proper utilization of solid digestate, and pyrolysis emerges as an effective method to produce nutrient-rich biochar. This study investigated the leaching characteristics and speciation changes of nutrients in food waste digestate (FWD)-derived biochar pyrolyzed at 350 °C (BC350), 450 °C (BC450), and 550 °C (BC550). BC350 featured inorganic nitrogen, while BC450 and BC550 contained elevated organic nitrogen.

The majority of the studies on nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) are conducted at a laboratory-scale, while field-scale evidence is scarce. The objective of this study was to compare the metal(loid) immobilization efficiency of selected Fe-based materials under field conditions for a period of one year. Two contrasting metal(loid) (As, Cd, Pb, Zn) enriched soils from a smelter-contaminated area were amended with sulfidized nZVI (S-nZVI) solely or combined with thermally stabilized sewage sludge and compared to amendment with microscale iron grit.

The successful application of gradient boosting regression (GBR) in machine learning to forecast surface area, pore volume, and yield in biomass-derived activated carbon (AC) production underscores its potential for enhancing manufacturing processes. The GBR model, collecting 17 independent variables for two-step activation (2-SA) and 14 for one-step activation (1-SA), demonstrates effectiveness across three datasets-1-SA, 2-SA, and a combined dataset. Notably, in 1-SA, the GBR model yields R values of 0.

Copper plays a crucial role in the low-carbon transformation of global communities with prevalent use of electric vehicles. This study proposed an environmentally friendly approach that utilizes a deep eutectic solvent (DES), choline chloride-ethylene glycol (ChCl-EG), as green solvent for the selective extraction of copper from scrap materials. With hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizing agent, the copper species from the printed circuit boards (PCBs) scraps were efficiently leached by the DES through oxidation-complexation reactions (conditions: 25 min, 20 °C, and 5 wt% HO).

Ca-biochar is an efficient material for As(III)-containing acid mine drainage (AMD) decontamination, while it is challenging to fabricate Ca-biochar with oyster shell waste as the Ca source due to its complex structure. Herein, a mechanochemical method was proposed to activate oyster shell waste and wood waste for Ca-biochar design and production, and its efficacy and relevant mechanisms for AMD detoxification were evaluated. The smaller size Ca-biochar produced by the medium-speed ball milling showed a higher As(III) removal (74.
