A scanning electron microscopy study of CO2 laser-albumin soldering in the rabbit model.

Objective: We sought to assess the rabbit as an experimental animal in the investigation of laser skin soldering. We studied, using the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the surface appearances of experimental incisions made on the rabbit back skin and soldered by CO(2) laser.

Background Data: Laser soldering of incisions in various tissues is a modality of wound healing of a very promising clinical value.

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the effects of acetaminophen and N-acetylcysteine on the surface morphology of Hep3B hepatoma cells in vitro.

Acetaminophen (AAP) is harmful to the liver if consumed in excessive doses. Its toxicity can be counteracted by N-acetylcysteine (NAC). The authors studied cultures of Hep3B cells exposed to AAP or NAC or both, at 24 and 48 h, using the scanning electron microscope.

Effects of UV-A irradiation on lens morphology and optics.

Epidemiological studies have indicated that ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is one of the main factors leading to senile cataract formation. We investigated morphological changes in the eye lens caused by UVR-A. Twenty three pairs of lenses obtained from 23 one-year-old calves were used for this study.

Multiple roles for u-turn/ventral veinless in the development of Drosophila PNS.

Most of the cells in the embryonic peripheral nervous system (PNS) of Drosophila are born in their final location. One known exception is the group of lateral chordotonal organs (lch5) whose precursors form in a dorsal position, yet the mature organs are located in the lateral PNS cluster. Mutations in the u-turn (ut) locus perturb the localization of lch5 neurons and result in a 'dorsal chordotonals' phenotype.
