This work studied the effect of different electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of acetamide-chalcone derivatives. The results showed that the addition of the dimethylamine group led to a large fluorescence emission (71% of fluorescence quantum yield in DMSO solution) that can be triggered by two and three-photon excitations, which is essential for biological applications. Furthermore, dimethylamine also red-shifts the lower energy state by approximately 90 nm, increasing the two-photon absorption cross-section of the lower energy band by more than 100% compared with the other studied compounds.

Azochromophores present interesting optical properties for application in all-optical switches (AOSs), such as ultrafast photoisomerization and considerable nonlinear optical response. However, determining the frequency-resolved microscopic second-order hyperpolarizability (real and imaginary parts) related to the pure electronic effects of molecules in solution is a challenging task. In this context, we have used femtosecond-laser induced nonlinear ellipse rotation (NER) measurements to obtain the electronic nonlinear refraction (()) and two-photon absorption spectra (()) of four azochromophores dissolved in methanol and acetone.

Background: Anti-tumor necrosis factor agents were the first biologic therapy approved for the management of Crohn's disease (CD). Heart failure (HF) is a rare but potential adverse effect of these medications. The objective of this report is to describe a patient with CD who developed HF after the use of infliximab.

BACKGROUND Hemangiomas are benign vascular neoplasms that originate from fast-growing embryonic mesodermal tissue and have a proliferation of endothelial cells, which manifest themselves in different forms, locations, and dimensions. Owing to its rarity and similarity of symptoms with other chronic bowel diseases, intestinal hemangioma is a differential diagnosis to be considered in patients presenting with symptoms such as abdominal pain and anemia. CASE REPORT A 46-year-old woman with a history of diffuse abdominal pain and abdominal distension for 20 years presented with a worsening of symptoms in the past year.

Since the disclosure of Biginelli reaction by the chemist Pietro Biginelli, functionalized 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones/thiones (DHPMs) have emerged as prototypes for the design of compounds with a broad variety of biological activities. This mini-review describes over 100 Biginelli adducts demonstrated to be promising anticancer, inhibitors of calcium channel, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. Thus, this compilation presents the most notable in vitro and in vivo results for such fascinating class of organic compounds.

An efficient method is proposed for obtaining tetrahydrobenzo[a]xanthene-11-ones and tetrahydro-[1,3]-dioxolo[4,5-b]xanthen-9-ones. The method is based on the use of p-sulfonic acid calix[n]arenes as catalysts under solvent-free conditions. The antiproliferative activity of fifty-nine xanthenones against six human cancer cells was studied.

Indole alkaloids comprise a large and complex class of natural products found in a variety of marine sources. Infectious diseases remain a major threat to public health, and in the absence of long-term protective vaccines, the control of these infectious diseases is based on a small number of chemotherapeutic agents. Furthermore, the emerging resistance against these drugs makes it urgently necessary to discover and develop new, safe and, effective anti-infective agents.

Nature is an irrefutable source of inspiration for the modern man in many aspects. The observation and understanding of nature have allowed the development of new materials, new sources of energies, new drugs etc. Specifically, natural products provide a great contribution to the development of new agents for the treatment of infections and antitumor agents.

To assess the effects of medicinal plants (MPs) or related natural products (RNPs) on fibromyalgia (FM) patients, we evaluate the possible benefits and advantages of MP or RNP for the treatment of FM based on eight randomized placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) involving 475 patients. The methodological quality of all studies included was determined according to JADAD and "Risk of Bias" with the criteria in the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions 5.1.

Fourteen Hantzsch adducts with different substituents at the C-4 position were synthesized through multicomponent reactions by using citric or lactic acid as catalysts. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the synthesis of such a class of compounds based on multicomponent reactions catalyzed by non-toxic organic acids. The potential to scavenge reactive nitrogen/oxygen species (RNS/ROS) and the ability to inhibit cancer cell growth were then investigated.

A series of Biginelli adducts bearing different substituents at C-4 position were synthesized by using p-sulfonic acid calix[4]arene as a catalyst. The in vitro potential to scavenge reactive nitrogen/oxygen species (RNS and ROS) and the ability to inhibit cancer cells growth were then investigated. Four adducts were found to be potent scavengers of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (RNS) and/or superoxide anion (ROS) radicals.

Background: An increased anxiety may be associated with a higher risk of surgical site infection (SSI), but there is little objective data on the effect of preoperative anxiolytic interventions on SSI. To address this issue, we evaluated the effects of preoperative diazepam on postoperative SSI following abdominal hysterectomy.

Methods: This randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study included 130 patients, American Society of Anesthesiologist physical status 1 or 2.
