Introduction Low testosterone (T) is linked with frailty, which predicts poor postoperative recovery across many surgical procedures. Therefore, low T may impact perioperative outcomes for surgical patients. We sought to characterize the association between low T, frailty, and perioperative outcomes in patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and laser photovaporization of the prostate (PVP).

Article Synopsis
  • The study assesses the prevalence of hypogonadism in men undergoing partial nephrectomy and explores its connection to frailty and postoperative outcomes.
  • Among 9,105 men, 8.9% were found to be hypogonadal, showing that they were more frail than their counterparts, but there was no significant difference in hospital stay or complications following surgery.
  • Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) was linked to a reduced risk of emergency department visits in high-risk frail men, highlighting the importance of assessing frailty and potentially screening for testosterone levels in patients facing this surgery.

Importance: Insomnia symptoms affect an estimated 30% to 50% of the 4 million US breast cancer survivors. Previous studies have shown the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), but high insomnia prevalence suggests continued opportunities for delivery via new modalities.

Objective: To determine the efficacy of a CBT-I-informed, voice-activated, internet-delivered program for improving insomnia symptoms among breast cancer survivors.

The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has had widespread implications on various aspects of life; however, there is a paucity of longitudinal data regarding its impact on sexual behavior. To assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on changes in frequency of sexual activity and partner dynamics in the United States, we utilized data from the General Social Survey (GSS). This biannual survey of adults in the United States, provided responses from 12,791 participants, enabling a comparative analysis of sexual behaviors between pre-COVID-19 (2016 and 2018, n = 5215 respondents) and COVID-19 periods (2021 and 2022, n = 7576 respondents).

Article Synopsis
  • A study surveyed 210 males aged 18-40 to assess the prevalence and use of erectile dysfunction (ED) medication, finding a 57.1% prevalence rate, with 39.0% reporting prior medication use.
  • Factors such as being Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, and having Medicare or Medicaid insurance were linked to increased medication use, while a high income (> $200,000) correlated with decreased usage.
  • Despite receiving counseling about ED medications, many still lacked knowledge about proper use, highlighting the need for better patient education and indicating stigma around men's sexual health issues.

Purpose To evaluate the prevalence of elevated blood pressure (EBP), hypertension (HTN), and obesity among men presenting for fertility evaluation. Methods We retrospectively evaluated all men presenting for male infertility consultation at a single institution from 2000 to 2018. Blood pressure (BP) measurements were abstracted from the electronic health record, and EBP/HTN was defined according to American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology guidelines (systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 120 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 80 mmHg).

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is an abnormal proliferation of smooth muscle-like cells and may occur sporadically or in association with tuberous sclerosis complex. Patients are typically female, nonsmoking and may have cystic lung disease with pneumothorax. Diagnosis can be made by compatible imaging findings with a history of tuberous sclerosis complex, or in conjunction with vascular endothelial growth factor-D 800 pg/ml or greater, a highly specific finding.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to explore how aging, metabolic syndrome, daily rhythms, and seasonal changes affect serum testosterone levels based on current guidelines for testosterone deficiency.
  • - Using data from the UK Biobank and evaluating 197,883 men, results showed that men without metabolic syndrome had significantly higher testosterone levels than those with it, but the average levels remained consistent across different age groups.
  • - Findings indicated that testosterone levels vary significantly based on metabolic health and the time of day, but not strictly due to age, suggesting a need for personalized assessment of testosterone levels instead of relying solely on age-related expectations.
