Background: Fibrous stricture formation causing dysphagia after oesophagogastrectomy with a circular stapled or sutured anastomosis remains a significant complication, occurring in up to one-third of cases. An anastomosis that avoids this complication would be desirable, given that resection is often performed to palliate dysphagia. We describe a technique of oesophagogastric anastomosis using linear staplers which eliminates the postoperative complication of fibrous stricture formation.

Phthalate esters such as di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) either promote or inhibit rat liver tumorigenesis depending on the carcinogenesis protocol. In this study, we examined the expression of two histochemical markers, the tumor associated isozyme of aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH-3) and the oncoprotein p21 Ras, in the livers of male F344 rats. The rats were initiated with DEN and further treated with either DEHP (a known inhibitor of hepatocarcinogenesis), phenobarbital (PB, a known promoter of hepatocarcinogenesis), or a combination of DEHP and PB.

Toxic effects of 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB) in male and female rats were evaluated by feeding powdered certified laboratory chow diet supplemented with varied concentrations of TNB (0, 50, 200, 400, 800 and 1200 mg kg-1 diet) for 14 days. Food intake by female rats in 400, 800 and 1200 mg TNB diet groups was reduced and resulted in a significant decrease in absolute body weights (BW). Food and water consumption by male rats in high-dose groups (800 and 1200 mg TNB kg-1 diet) was also reduced and resulted in a significant decrease in body weight.

Mutagenicity analysis of urine from rats treated by oral gavage with MX at a dose of 64 mg/kg for 14 days revealed that only 0.3% of the administered compound was excreted in a genotoxically active form. At lower doses, mutagenicity was not detectable.

Adult male and female Sprague-Dawley rats received epichlorohydrin via gavage in distilled water for 10 consecutive days at dose levels of 3, 7, 19, and 46 mg/kg-day, and for 90 days at dose levels of 1, 5, and 25 mg/kg-day. Epichlorohydrin did not adversely effect mortality, but toxicity, at the higher doses, was evident by: 1) losses in body weight gain and organ weights, 2) reductions in food and water consumption, and 3) in the hematological and microscopic examinations in both study periods. Significant decreases in erythrocyte count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit levels were found in the high dose level in males after 10 and 90 days.

We examined the incidence of proliferative lesions, hyperplastic nodules and altered hepatic foci, in male F344 rat liver, to determine their preneoplastic potential during dichloroacetic acid (DCA)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis. Immunohistochemical and image analysis methods were used to detect the expression of 6 histochemical markers of neoplastic cells; p21 ras, p39 c-jun, p55 c-fos, aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), glutathione s-transferase (GST-p), and alpha fetoprotein (AFP) during DCA-induced hepatocarcinogenesis. Our results were consistent with our previous data and suggested that the hyperplastic nodules, rather than altered hepatic foci, is a putative preneoplastic lesion during DCA-induced hepatocarcinogenesis in the male F344 rat.

Lymphoid neoplasia is now well known to occur in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection but the first case of acute monocytic leukaemia in an HIV-seropositive man has been only recently described. We report the case of an HIV-infected patient who simultaneously developed skin lesions of acute monocytic leukaemia and chicken pox. We suggest that HIV may produce a malignant transformation of monocytic cells.

The Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome (BOS) is a rare connective tissue disorder inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern characterized by cutaneous lesions, dermatofibrosis lenticularis disseminata, and osteopoikilosis. We report a new case of this syndrome in a 66 year old man, interesting by its association with a protein C deficiency, another rare genetically transmitted disease. Diagnosis of the BOS is difficult on the mere cutaneous lesions; it is therefore important to systematically practice bone X-rays in the presence of atypical pseudoxanthoma elasticum, disseminated collagenoma or disseminated connective tissue or elastic nevi.

Oesophageal foreign bodies occur commonly, but dentures are swallowed infrequently. Two cases are reported that demonstrate the difficulties in the localization and retrieval of ingested dentures, because they are radiolucent and have an awkward shape. Early rigid oesophagoscopy is recommended as the most appropriate investigation and method of removal.
