SUMMARY Information systems assist in documentation and clinical decision support in settings ranging from an outpatient clinical encounter to the monitoring in an operating room. Such information, if stored and categorized well in a centralized database, offers a treasure trove of information for translational researchers. At Vanderbilt University Medical Center (TN, USA), there is an ongoing effort to advance information systems in all areas and couple this data with a robust genetic repository.

Objective: Intrathecal (IT) drug delivery systems for patients with chronic non-malignant pain are intended to improve pain and quality of life and reduce side effects of systemic use. A subset of patients may have escalating pain, functional decline, and/or intolerable side effects even as IT opioid doses are increased. Discontinuation of IT medications may represent a viable treatment option but strategies to accomplish this are needed.

The inward rectifier family of potassium (Kir) channels is comprised of at least 16 family members exhibiting broad and often overlapping cellular, tissue, or organ distributions. The discovery of disease-causing mutations in humans and experiments on knockout mice has underscored the importance of Kir channels in physiology and in some cases raised questions about their potential as drug targets. However, the paucity of potent and selective small-molecule modulators targeting specific family members has with few exceptions mired efforts to understand their physiology and assess their therapeutic potential.
