To understand the dynamics of Zika virus (ZIKV)-specific antibody immunity in children born to mothers in a flavivirus-endemic region during and after the emergence of ZIKV in the Americas. Purification of biopharmaceuticals has shifted toward continuous and integrated processes, in turn bringing along a need for monitoring and control to maintain a desired separation between the target pharmaceutical and any impurities it may carry. In this study, a cycle-to-cycle control of the retention volumes of two compounds in a chromatographic, ion exchange purification step was developed, allowing the process to maintain the desired retention volumes in the separation. The controller made use of a model-based, multivariate iterative learning control (ILC) algorithm that used a quadratic-criterion objective function for optimal set point control, along with feed-forward control based on direct model inversion for preemptive control of set point changes.

Muscle atrophy in metabolic conditions like chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes are associated with glucocorticoid production, dysfunctional insulin/Akt/FoxO3 signaling and increased myostatin expression. We recently found that CREB, a transcription factor proposed to regulate myostatin expression, is highly phosphorylated in some wasting conditions. Based on a novel Akt-PDE3/4 signaling paradigm, we hypothesized that reduced Akt signaling contributes to CREB activation and myostatin expression.

Intravascular leiomyomatosis is a rare condition characterized by histologically benign smooth muscle cell growth within the uterine veins and inferior vena cava and, rarely, into the right chambers of the heart. A 39-year-old female with a history of hysterectomy for uterine leiomyoma was admitted for lower limb oedema and progressive dyspnea of 5 months' duration. Transthoracic echocardiography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a large mass extending through the inferior vena cava into the right chambers of the heart.

In this work a biotechnological multiproduct batch plant that manufactures four different recombinant proteins for human application is described in some detail. Background: Deep burn assessment made by clinical evaluation has an accuracy varying between 60% and 80% and will determine if a burn injury will need tangential excision and skin grafting or if it will be able to heal spontaneously. Laser Doppler Imaging (LDI) techniques allow an improved burn depth assessment but their use is limited by the time-consuming image acquisition which may take up to 6 min per image.

Methods: To evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of a newly developed full-field LDI technology, 15 consecutive patients presenting with intermediate depth burns were assessed both clinically and by FluxExplorer LDI technology.
