Fiber intake is associated with a lower risk for Alzheimer´s disease (AD) in older adults. Intake of plant-based diets rich in soluble fiber promotes the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs: butyrate, acetate, propionate) by gut bacteria. Butyrate administration has antiinflammatory actions, but propionate promotes neuroinflammation.

Background: Normal aging is accompanied by cognitive deficiencies, affecting women and men equally. Aging is the main risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), with women having a higher risk. The higher prevalence of AD in women is associated with the abrupt hormonal decline seen after menopause.

Article Synopsis
  • Microglia are protective brain cells that respond to toxins by releasing inflammatory signals and clearing damaged tissue through phagocytosis; they also store iron using the protein ferritin, which is linked to inflammation.
  • A study on male marmosets found that older individuals had more ferritin-expressing microglia with an activated phenotype, but this number decreased in the oldest group.
  • The research indicates that while ferritin may protect microglia in younger and older adults, its decline and increased brain iron content in aged subjects could be associated with neurodegeneration, as seen by the presence of oxidized RNA in neurons.

Recent investigations have demonstrated an important role of gut microbiota (GM) in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). GM modulates a host's health and disease by production of several substances, including lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), among others. Diet can modify the composition and diversity of GM, and ingestion of a healthy diet has been suggested to lower the risk to develop AD.
