Pemetrexed in second line and beyond small cell lung cancer: a Hoosier Oncology Group phase II study.

Introduction: : Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is initially a chemotherapy-sensitive disease. Nevertheless, drug-resistance results in disease recurrence in most patients. Many drugs, including antimetabolites, are active, but only minimal progress has been made in improving survival times for those with advanced disease.

Phase III study of cisplatin, etoposide, and concurrent chest radiation with or without consolidation docetaxel in patients with inoperable stage III non-small-cell lung cancer: the Hoosier Oncology Group and U.S. Oncology.

Purpose: Concurrent chemoradiotherapy is standard treatment for patients with inoperable stage III non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A phase II study by the Southwest Oncology Group using consolidation docetaxel after cisplatin (P), etoposide (E), and radiation (XRT) resulted in a median survival time (MST) of 26 months. This randomized phase III trial evaluated whether consolidation docetaxel was responsible for this improved survival.

Gefitinib plus celecoxib in chemotherapy-naïve patients with stage IIIB/IV non-small cell lung cancer: a phase II study from the Hoosier Oncology Group.

Background: Gefitinib, an inhibitor of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) pathway, has single agent activity in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Preclinical studies demonstrate significant interactions between the EGFR and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) pathways and that simultaneous inhibition may have benefits over EGFR inhibitors alone.

Eligibility Criteria: chemotherapy-naive, stage IIIb (with pleural effusion) or IV NSCLC, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (PS) 0-1.
