A free-ranging, adult female two-toed sloth () was brought to a wildlife rescue center in Costa Rica with ocular and auricular myiasis and numerous skin lesions. After one month of unsuccessful systemic and topical antimicrobial treatment, the patient died. A postmortem examination was performed, and tissues were examined histologically, confirming disseminated amebic infection with intralesional trophozoites and cysts in the lungs, liver, eye, heart, spleen, and stomach.

A 2-y-old, intact female, mixed-breed dog was presented to the veterinary hospital with abdominal distension, anemia, and lethargy following a chronic history of nonspecific gastrointestinal signs. CBC and serum biochemistry revealed moderate nonregenerative anemia with neutrophilia, hypoalbuminemia, hyperglobulinemia, hypoglycemia, decreased urea and creatinine, and hypercholesterolemia. Abdominal radiographs and ultrasound revealed a large heterogeneous mesenteric mass and ascites.

Epithelioid hemangiosarcoma (EH), a rare histological variant of hemangiosarcoma, is reported in various animal species, including humans, dogs, cows, horses, and cats. Epithelioid hemangiosarcomas are composed of highly pleomorphic epithelioid cells arranged in cords, islands, nests, or solid cellular areas, similar to epithelial neoplasms. Moreover, in humans, approximately 50% of EHs have cytoplasmic immunolabeling for cytokeratin AE1/AE3 (CK AE1/AE3), making it challenging to distinguish them from carcinomas.

Article Synopsis
  • Fibrolipomas are benign tumors composed of fat and fibrous tissue that are commonly found in the mouth of dogs, with a particular prevalence in males and dogs around 10 years old.
  • In a study examining 112 cases, the tongue was identified as the most common location for these tumors, followed by the buccal mucosa and sublingual area.
  • The anatomical distribution of oral fibrolipomas varied by dog breed, but other factors like sex and age showed no significant differences, highlighting the need to consider fibrolipomas when diagnosing oral masses in dogs.

Neuromuscular and vascular hamartoma (NMVH) is an infrequent gastrointestinal lesion described in human and veterinary medical literature. The histologic features of this entity are haphazardly arranged fascicles of smooth muscle, nerve fibers, scattered ganglion cells, and hemangiomatous blood vessels. Here we describe 2 putative cases of NMVH in a 1.

Article Synopsis
  • A 17-year-old Arabian mare with a history of recurring mild colic was presented to a veterinary hospital, where lab tests indicated various problems, including mild lymphopenia and increased liver enzymes.
  • Following the worsening of her condition, the owner chose euthanasia, leading to a postmortem examination that revealed a cholangiocarcinoma, a rare bile duct tumor.
  • The tumor was identified as a mucinous variant, characterized by large cysts filled with mucin, and is notably uncommon in horses, as this type has not been previously documented in veterinary cases.

Background: Heartworm disease (HWD) is a vector-borne disease caused by the filarial nematode . Low antigen levels caused by immune complex formation preclude HWD diagnosis. Heat treatment is an immune complex dissociation technique used to enhance antigen detection.

A 2-year-old male budgerigar () died after a 1-day history of fracture of the rostral rhinotheca with pale mucous membranes, dyspnea, dull mentation, and ataxia. Histopathology revealed an infiltrative neoplasm composed of interweaving streams of spindle cells effacing the dermis and bone of the rostral upper beak as well as a ganglion and two cranial nerves. No visceral metastasis was observed.

Bats are important natural reservoir hosts of a diverse range of viruses that can be transmitted to humans and have been suggested to play an important role in the Zika virus (ZIKV) transmission cycle. However, the exact role of these animals as reservoirs for flaviviruses is still controversial. To further expand our understanding of the role of bats in the ZIKV transmission cycle in Latin America, we carried out an experimental infection in wild-caught Artibeus lituratus bats and sampled several free-living neotropical bats across three countries of the region.

A 12-y-old, male Dachshund was presented for elective orchiectomy. The testes were of normal size. The left testis had numerous dark-red, blood clot-like foci within the vaginal tunic over the pampiniform plexus, epididymis, and testis.

Phaeohyphomycosis is an infection caused by melanized fungi. This disease has been reported in several animal species including invertebrates, cold-blooded vertebrates, mammals, and humans. Melanized fungi have similar phenotypical features and confirmation requires culture and molecular diagnostics.

A 12-year-old male neutered Australian Shepherd Dog was presented to Charlotte Animal Referral & Emergency with a history of a thoracic mass. On physical examination, physiological parameters were within the normal ranges, and a complete haemogram and serum biochemistry profile were unremarkable except for mild thrombocytopenia. A computed tomography scan revealed a 21 × 15 × 12.

Red-bellied lemurs (Eulemur rubriventer: genus Eulemur, family Lemuridae, Suborder Strepsirrhini) are non-human primates endemic to the forests of Madagascar and listed as 'vulnerable' on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Currently, descriptions of neoplasia in this species are extremely scarce, with only one case of hepatocellular adenoma reported. Prosimian submissions received by the Anatomic Pathology Service at North Carolina State University from January 2010 to January 2021 were retrieved.

Bats are important reservoirs and spreaders of pathogens, including those of zoonotic concern. Though Costa Rica hosts one of the highest bat species' diversity, no information is available about their parasites. In order to investigate the occurrence of vector-borne pathogens (VBPs) and gastrointestinal (GI) parasites of chiropterans from this neotropical area, ectoparasites ( = 231) and stools ( = 64) were collected from 113 bats sampled in Santa Cruz (site 1) and Talamanca (site 2).

An approximately 12-year-old, 31 kg, male neutered Labrador Retriever was presented to the referring hospital with an acute onset (less than 1 day) of hematemesis and melena. The dog was treated supportively for a presumptive gastric ulcer for 4 days with intravenous fluids, gastro protectants, such as pantoprazole, misoprostol, sucralfate, and barium, as well as an anti-emetic (maropitant) and analgesics (fentanyl, gabapentin, and tramadol). Throughout medical management, the dog continued to require blood transfusions approximately every 24 h.

Arboviruses have two ecological transmission cycles: sylvatic and urban. For some, the sylvatic cycle has not been thoroughly described in America. To study the role of wildlife in a putative sylvatic cycle, we sampled free-ranging bats and birds in two arbovirus endemic locations and analyzed them using molecular, serological, and histological methods.
