Objectives: Antiplatelet therapy increases the risk of bleeding and transfusion in patients undergoing extracorporeal circulation. Reduced goal-directed anticoagulation is a personalized approach to reduce the anticoagulation based on a lower targeted activated clotting time. We assessed whether reduced goal-directed anticoagulation using optimized extracorporeal circulation alleviates the risk of severe bleeding in patients treated by dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) compared to aspirin alone during coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

  • Heart transplantation is crucial for patients with advanced heart failure, but there's a shortage of donor organs, leading to the increased use of extended criteria donors (ECD).
  • Many ECDs at risk for coronary artery disease do not undergo standard coronary angiography, resulting in some hearts being declined or procured without proper screening.
  • The described protocol demonstrates a new method for performing coronary angiography during normothermic ex-situ heart perfusion (NESP), showing it to be reproducible without affecting heart viability and potentially improving ECD procurement rates.

Memory B cells (mBCs) are characterized by their long-term stability, fast reactivation, and capability to rapidly differentiate into antibody-secreting cells (ASCs). However, the role of T cells in the differentiation of mBCs, in contrast to naive B cells, remains to be delineated. We study the role of T cells in mBC responses, using CD40L stimulation and autologous T-B co-cultures.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how interferon (IFN) signaling pathways affect autoantibody production and symptoms in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), aiming to improve diagnostics and personalized treatments.
  • Researchers analyzed samples from 34 pSS patients and 38 healthy donors, finding elevated IFN pathway molecules like STAT1, STAT2, and IRF9 in most T and B cells from patients, indicating heightened signaling activity.
  • Results suggest that high levels of STAT1 and IRF9 are linked to specific autoimmune features and can serve as biomarkers for disease severity and the presence of extraglandular symptoms in pSS patients.

Bone marrow plasma cells (BMPC) are the correlate of humoral immunity, consistently releasing antibodies into the bloodstream. It remains unclear if BMPC reflect different activation environments or maturation of their precursors. Here we define human BMPC heterogeneity and track the recruitment of antibody-secreting cells (ASC) from SARS-CoV-2 vaccine immune reactions to the bone marrow (BM).

Pulmonary embolism is a common complication after intracranial hemorrhage. As thrombolysis is contraindicated in this situation, surgical pulmonary embolectomy may be indicated in case of high-risk pulmonary embolism but requires transient anticoagulation with heparin during cardiopulmonary bypass. We report the case of a patient with a history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia who presented with a high-risk pulmonary embolism 10 days after the spontaneous onset of a voluminous intracerebral hematoma.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a crucial role as a counter half-reaction for both electrochemical hydrogen production through water splitting and the generation of valuable carbon compounds via CO reduction. To overcome the sluggish kinetics of the OER, significant efforts have been devoted to developing cost-effective, sustainable, and efficient electrocatalysts, with transition-metal-based catalysts emerging as promising candidates. Herein, we successfully synthesized a core-shell type nanostructure of Fe-doped CoMoO/CoMoO (CMFO), which exhibits excellent electrocatalytic properties for OER.

One-dimensional ZnO nanorods (NRs) have been extensively studied as photoanodes because of their unique optical properties, high electron mobility, and suitable band positions for water oxidation. However, their practical efficiency is often compromised by chemical instability during water oxidation and high carrier recombination rates. To overcome this issue, precise morphological control of ZnO@ZnWO core-shell structured photoanodes, featuring a ZnO core and a ZnWO shell was used.
