This paper reviews and extends searches for the direct pair production of the scalar supersymmetric partners of the top and bottom quarks in proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS collaboration during the LHC Run 1. Most of the analyses use 20 [Formula: see text] of collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of [Formula: see text] TeV, although in some case an additional [Formula: see text] of collision data at [Formula: see text] TeV are used. New analyses are introduced to improve the sensitivity to specific regions of the model parameter space.

Many extensions of the Standard Model predict the existence of charged heavy long-lived particles, such as -hadrons or charginos. These particles, if produced at the Large Hadron Collider, should be moving non-relativistically and are therefore identifiable through the measurement of an anomalously large specific energy loss in the ATLAS pixel detector. Measuring heavy long-lived particles through their track parameters in the vicinity of the interaction vertex provides sensitivity to metastable particles with lifetimes from 0.

Surface-active compounds (SACs) are widely used in different industries as well as in many daily consumption products. However, with the increasing concern for their environmental acceptability, attention has turned towards biological SACs which are biodegradable, less toxic and more environmentally friendly. In this work, 176 marine hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial isolates from petroleum-contaminated sites along the Norwegian coastline were isolated and screened for their capacity to produce biological SACs.

Background: Improved prediction of neuroblastoma (NB) behavior is needed to detect treatment-refractory disease and may allow further reduction in therapy for some patients. In this regard, serum metabolomic analysis has proven utility in several cancer types. We hypothesize that serum metabolomic analysis will correlate with risk-group classification for patients with NB, and sensitively detect NB in murine xenograft models.

Crossing a two-way street is a complex task that involves visual, cognitive and motor abilities, all of which are known to decline with ageing. In particular, older pedestrians may experience difficulties when crossing two-way streets because of incorrect gap acceptance choices and impossible or unperceived evasive actions. To understand the overrepresentation of older pedestrians in crash statistics, several experimental studies have sought to identify traffic-related factors as well as those related to the abilities of the individuals themselves.

Studies of the spin, parity and tensor couplings of the Higgs boson in the [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] decay processes at the LHC are presented. The investigations are based on [Formula: see text] of collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at [Formula: see text] TeV and [Formula: see text] TeV. The Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson hypothesis, corresponding to the quantum numbers [Formula: see text], is tested against several alternative spin scenarios, including non-SM spin-0 and spin-2 models with universal and non-universal couplings to fermions and vector bosons.

Results of a search for new phenomena in events with large missing transverse momentum and a Higgs boson decaying to two photons are reported. Data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb^{-1} have been collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC.

Two new sesquiterpenes, named dysinidins A-B (3, 4) along with two known sesquiterpenes, furodysinin lactone (1) and O-methyl urodysinin lactone (2), were isolated from the Vietnamese marine sponge Dysidea fragilis. Their structures were determined by ID- and 2D-NMR spectroscopies and HR ESI MS, as well as by comparison with reported literature data. None of compounds showed inhibitory growth of human lung cancer cell lines, A-549 and H-1975 (IC50 > 30 μM).

We evaluated the association of baseline prognostic factors with conditional net survival among survivors of six subtypes non-Hodgkin lymphoma using the SEER program data from 2000-2012. Among 2-year survivors, further prognosis markedly improved in Burkitt's (BL) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), and became the same as for follicular lymphoma (5-year net survival ≥ 85%). Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) demonstrated the worst prognosis of all studied histologies up to 5 years of survivorship.

A search for Higgs boson pair production [Formula: see text] is performed with 19.5 fb[Formula: see text] of proton-proton collision data at [Formula: see text] TeV, which were recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012. The decay products of each Higgs boson are reconstructed as a high-momentum [Formula: see text] system with either a pair of small-radius jets or a single large-radius jet, the latter exploiting jet substructure techniques and associated -tagged track-jets.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a single monthly dose of cholecalciferol in healthy school children.

Methods: A total of 118 children of class VI of a residential school were selected to receive vitamin D supplementation in the form of oral cholecalciferol 60,000 IU monthly. Serum calcium and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) levels were estimated at 0 and 12 months.

Foroderm is a new cutaneous delivery technology that uses high-aspect ratio, cylindrical silica microparticles, that are massaged into the skin using a 3D-printed microtextured applicator, in order to deliver payloads across the epidermis. Herein we show that this technology is effective for delivery of a non-adjuvanted, inactivated, whole-virus chikungunya virus vaccine in mice, with minimal post-vaccination skin reactions. A single topical Foroderm-based vaccination induced T cell, Th1 cytokine and antibody responses, which provided complete protection against viraemia and disease after challenge with chikungunya virus.

A phase II study was performed to evaluate the efficacy of hyper-fractionated cyclophosphamide, vincristine, pegylated liposomal doxorubicin and dexamethasone alternating with methotrexate/cytarabine (HCVIDD/MA) in patients with newly diagnosed peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL), excluding ALK-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Fifty-three patients were enrolled. Treatment was planned for up to 8 cycles but only 9% of patients received more than 6 cycles due primarily to disease progression (n = 13) or prolonged thrombocytopenia (n = 12).

Peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCL) are rare but markedly aggressive forms of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). They carry a poor prognosis, with current therapeutic approach being generally ineffective. The most employed first-line treatment is CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone), which still results in high rates of relapses.

A search for Higgs boson decays to invisible particles is performed using 20.3 [Formula: see text] of collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The process considered is Higgs boson production in association with a vector boson ([Formula: see text] or ) that decays hadronically, resulting in events with two or more jets and large missing transverse momentum.

The invasive nature of glioblastoma renders them incurable by current therapeutic interventions. Using a novel invasive human glioma model, we previously identified the neurotrophin receptor p75(NTR) (aka CD271) as a mediator of glioma invasion. Herein, we provide evidence that preventing phosphorylation of p75(NTR) on S303 by pharmacological inhibition of PKA, or by a mutational strategy (S303G), cripples p75(NTR)-mediated glioma invasion resulting in serine phosphorylation within the C-terminal PDZ-binding motif (SPV) of p75(NTR).
