Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how different blood flow patterns can help tell if an aneurysm in the brain is likely to burst or not.
  • Researchers compared 67 ruptured aneurysms to 68 that weren't ruptured and found that the ruptured ones had more complex blood flow patterns.
  • They also discovered that certain factors like location and shape of the aneurysm play a big role in whether it might rupture.

Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) is a pleiotropic cytokine expressed by a wide range of cell types and is known for hampering the effectiveness of cancer immune cell therapeutic approaches. We have designed a novel construct containing the extracellular domain of the TGF-β receptor II linked to a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor (GPI-ecto-TβRII) lacking the transmembrane and cytoplasmic signaling domain of TGF-β receptor II (TβRII). T cells transduced with lentivirus expressing the GPI-ecto-TβRII construct show 5 to 15 times higher membrane expression compared with a previously established dominant-negative receptor carrying a truncated signaling domain.

In this article, chemical structure and conformation in an aqueous solution of a new sulfated polysaccharide, P, extracted from green seaweed were elucidated by SEC-MALL, IR, NMR and SAXS. The results indicated that the obtained polysaccharide is a sulfated arabinogalactan with a molecular weight of 223 kDa, and is mainly composed of →3,6)-α-D-Gal4S→ and →2)-α-L-Ara→ connecting together through 1→3 glycoside linkages. It has a broken rod-like conformation in solution with estimated as 0.

Background: Recent trials including DIRECT-MT, DEVT, and SKIP have found that direct mechanical thrombectomy (MT) is equally effective as the combination of MT and intravenous thrombolysis. However, the results of the other trials, namely MR-CLEAN NO-IV and the SWIFT-DIRECT trial have failed to confirm the non-inferiority of direct MT vs. the combination therapy.

Multiphase CT scanning of the liver is performed for several clinical applications; however, radiation exposure from CT scanning poses a nontrivial cancer risk to the patients. The radiation dose may be reduced by determining the scan range of the subsequent scans by the location of the target of interest in the first scan phase. The purpose of this study is to present and assess an automatic method for determining the scan range for multiphase CT scans.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of RFA in the AFTN treatment after 2 years of follow-up and to find the factors related to treatment responses through TSH level and VRR.

Materials And Methods: This long-term prospective study was conducted from September 2017 to April 2021 on 17 AFTNs treated with RFA. Clinical evaluations, thyroid function tests, thyroid scintigraphy, and ultrasonography examinations were performed at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 24 months after ablation.

Acute bilateral internal carotid occlusion was a very rare disease with a very poor prognosis. Clinical case reports according to the literature showed that mechanical thrombectomy was the most optimal treatment. We reported a clinical case of successful treatment with simultaneous thrombectomy in both occluded carotid arteries.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the effectiveness of low-dose versus standard-dose intravenous alteplase as bridging therapy before mechanical thrombectomy (MTE) in patients with large-vessel occlusion acute ischemic stroke (LVO-AIS).
  • A total of 107 patients were analyzed, with no significant differences in functional independence, recanalization rates, and complications between the low-dose (0.6 mg/kg) and standard-dose (0.9 mg/kg) alteplase groups at 90 days post-stroke.
  • The findings suggest that low-dose alteplase can achieve similar clinical outcomes compared to standard-dose alteplase in this setting, providing insights into treatment options and affordability for stroke patients.

Mikulicz's disease is a unique condition involving the enlargement of the lacrimal and salivary glands, similar to that observed in Sjogren's syndrome; however, Mikulicz's disease is clinically characterized by infrequent autoimmune reactions and responsiveness to glucocorticoid treatment. The ultrasound features of the lacrimal and salivary glands in patients with IgG4-Mikulicz's disease were characterized by multiple hypoechoic areas of varying sizes within the enlarged glands. IgG4 serum level was also elevated, in contrast to the detection of normal levels in Sjogren's syndrome.

Postoperative hepatic lymphorrhea is extremely rare and there is no standard treatment for this condition. We report the cases of 3 men, 32-, 56-, and 37-year-old, with postoperative hepatic lymphorrhea, which was refractory to conservative treatment. Transhepatic lymphangiography allowed locating the lymphatic leak and treating it with hepatic lymphatic vessels injection of foam sclerotic agent.

Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) has been demonstrated as an effective treatment for acute ischemic stroke (AIS), thanks to large vessel occlusion (LVO), especially in case of anterior cerebral artery with many randomized clinical trials (RCTs) every year. On the other hand, there is a limited number of basilar artery occlusion (BAO)-related studies which have been conducted. The fact prompts our range of case studies, which furnish BAO understanding with our experience, results and some prognosis factors of MT.

Article Synopsis
  • Thrombectomy is a common treatment for acute ischemic stroke when there's an obstruction in major brain arteries, but guidelines for patients with multiple occlusions are lacking.
  • The case report describes a patient who suffered from multiple ischemic strokes (4 times) and faced complicated decisions due to simultaneous pulmonary embolism and cerebral artery occlusions, despite being on anticoagulant medication.
  • The authors aim to share insights on diagnosing and treating ischemic stroke effectively while exploring strategies for prevention and anticoagulant therapy.

Yersinia pestis DNA was recently detected in human remains from 2 ancient plague pandemics in France and Germany. We have now sequenced Y pestis glpD gene in such remains, showing a 93-bp deletion specific for biotype Orientalis. These data show that only Orientalis type caused the 3 plague pandemics.

Bartonella henselae causes chronic bacteremia in cats. To test if B. henselae DNA can be recovered from the dental pulp of cats buried a year previously, we used PCR with primers for a sequence of the conserved groEL to test 104 teeth from 11 cats.
