Purpose: To identify changes in morphological and mechanical properties in the volar ligament complex (VLC), dorsoradial ligaments (DRL), and posterior oblique ligaments (POL) in healthy and osteoarthritic female trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joints.

Methods: Twenty-four fresh-frozen female cadaveric TMCs were separated into (1) younger healthy/early-stage osteoarthritic, (2) elder healthy/early-stage osteoarthritic, and (3) advanced-stage osteoarthritic groups based on age and Eaton-Littler grading. Stress relaxation and load-to-failure testing were performed to characterize mechanical tensile properties.

Introduction/aims: Intercostal nerve injury can occur after rib fractures, resulting in denervation of the abdominal musculature. Loss of innervation to the rectus abdominis and intercostal muscles can cause pain, atrophy, and eventual eventration, which may be an underrecognized and thus undertreated complication of rib fractures. We investigated the clinical utility of intercostal nerve electrodiagnostic testing following rib fractures to diagnose and localize nerve injury at levels T7 and below.

Background: The all-dorsal scapholunate reconstruction technique is indicated for the treatment of scapholunate injuries in cases in which the carpus is reducible and there is no arthrosis present. The goal of this procedure is to reconstruct the torn dorsal portion of the scapholunate ligament in order to stabilize the scaphoid and lunate.

Description: A standard dorsal approach to the wrist, extending from the third metacarpal distally to the distal radioulnar joint, is utilized.

Peripheral nerve compression of the upper extremity is a common pathology often necessitating surgical intervention, much is known, but much more is left to understand. For the more common pathologies, carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, and ulnar tunnel syndrome, research and clinical efforts directed toward standardization and reduction of resource use have been attempted with varied success. Our purpose was to determine the rates of lower extremity nonunion and malunion over 17 years in South Carolina. Our hypothesis was that malunions and nonunions decreased over time due to improved access to trauma centers and improved orthopaedic surgical training. The South Carolina Department of Budget and Control Hospital Discharge Database was queried between 1998-2014 and yielded a total of 4,994 malunions and 16,454 nonunions.
