In vivo electrochemical lipolysis of fat in a Yucatan pig model: A proof of concept study.

Objectives: Traditional fat contouring is now regularly performed using numerous office based less invasive techniques. However, some limitations of these minimally invasive techniques include high cost or limited selectivity with performing localized contouring and reduction of fat. These shortcomings may potentially be addressed by electrochemical lipolysis (ECLL), a novel approach that involves the insertion of electrodes into tissue followed by application of a direct current (DC) electrical potential.

The "Flolan Rash": An Impressively Asymptomatic and Non-Inflammatory Eruption Following Long-Term Epoprostenol Therapy.

Epoprostenol (Flolan) is a last-resort intravenous medication for the treatment of severe pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Cutaneous adverse events of Flolan are well-known by pulmonologists, though lacking in dermatologic literature. We report a near erythrodermic appearing, yet asymptomatic eruption lasting 10 years in a woman with end-stage PAH treated with long-term intravenous epoprostenol.

Mitochondrial Autoantibodies and the Role of Apoptosis in Pemphigus Vulgaris.

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an IgG autoantibody-mediated, potentially fatal mucocutaneous disease manifested by progressive non-healing erosions and blisters. Beyond acting to inhibit adhesion molecules, PVIgGs elicit a unique process of programmed cell death and detachment of epidermal keratinocytes termed apoptolysis. Mitochondrial damage by antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA) has proven to be a critical link in this process.

Preparing for a Paradigm Shift in Medical Conference Development and Implementation.

The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has led to innovation in the way scientific advancements are disseminated and the structure of physician continuing medical education. With in-person medical conferences and meetings throughout the world impacted by travel restrictions and many geographically confined, virtual teleconferences with exceptional attendance have become an integral part of medical education. Our group has successfully produced >50 virtual educational seminars, including multiple global webinar conferences ranging between 24 and 55 h of continuous lectures each.

Development and Assessment of an Inexpensive Smartphone-Based Respiratory Droplet Simulation Model.

Droplet simulation often requires expensive and inaccessible equipment. Herein, we develop and assess a low-cost droplet simulation model using easily accessible materials, open-source software, and a smartphone-based cobalt blue light. The simulation model was developed using commercial-grade materials and fluorescein dye.

Complicated placenta accreta spectrum: identifying a high-risk cohort.

Objective: To assess differences in the perioperative complication rate between patients with placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) with and without complicating factors.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included subjects who underwent cesarean hysterectomy with histology-proven PAS between 23 0/7 and 42 0/7 weeks gestational age (GA) from 1 July 2008 to 11 April 2017. Perioperative outcomes were compared between those with uncomplicated PAS and "complicated PAS," defined as PAS subjects who experienced ≥2 bleeding episodes, preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), or premature contractions requiring tocolysis.

Massive unilateral fetal axillary lymphangioma: A case report.

We report a substantial axillary lymphangioma in a fetus delivered at 38 weeks of gestation. Detailed fetal survey at 20 weeks revealed a 5.45 × 3.

Electrochemical treatment of ex vivo human abdominal skin and potential use in scar management: A pilot study.

Introduction: Scar treatments aim to address pathologic collagen deposition; however, they can be expensive or difficult to control. Electrochemical therapy (ECT) offers a simple alternative treatment. The purpose of this study is to examine the acid-base and histological changes in ex vivo human abdominal skin following ECT.

Effect of Using an Age-adjusted D-dimer to Assess for Pulmonary Embolism in Community Emergency Departments.

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of changing the laboratory-reported D-dimer reference intervals to age-adjusted reference intervals on the use of advanced chest imaging and 30-day adverse events among emergency department (ED) encounters.

Methods: A retrospective interrupted time-series analysis of ED encounters for patients > 50 years evaluated for suspected pulmonary embolism (PE) from April 2014 to April 2016. The primary outcome was use of advanced diagnostic imaging, and the secondary outcome was 30-day mortality or PE diagnosis.

Body fat contouring procedures have increasingly grown in popularity over the years. As such, there is a need for inexpensive, minimally invasive, and simple fat reduction/contouring technique. To examine the acid-base and histological changes in ex vivo human adipose tissue after electrochemolipolysis (ECL).
