The development of a colloidal synthesis procedure to produce nanomaterials with high shape and size purity is often a time-consuming, iterative process. This is often due to quantitative uncertainties in the required reaction conditions and the time, resources, and expertise intensive characterization methods required for quantitative determination of nanomaterial size and shape. Absorption spectroscopy is often the easiest method for colloidal nanomaterial characterization.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA detailed analysis of ptychography for three-dimensional (3D) phase reconstructions of thick specimens is performed. We introduce multi-focus ptychography, which incorporates a 4D-STEM defocus series to enhance the quality of 3D reconstructions along the beam direction through a higher overdetermination ratio. This method is compared with established multi-slice ptychography techniques, such as conventional ptychography, regularized ptychography, and multi-mode ptychography.

We report synthesis, transport properties, and osmotic energy harvesting performance of another member of the nanotube porin family: boron nitride nanotube porins (BNNTPs). Cryo-transmission electron microscopy imaging, liposome transport assays, and DNA translocation experiments show that BNNTPs reconstitute into lipid membranes to form functional channels of ~2-nm diameter.

Antibiotic stewardship strategies are needed to reduce adverse patient outcomes and staggering healthcare costs due to resistant infections that ensue from inappropriate prescriptions.
Objective: To determine if individual provider scorecards detailing antibiotic prescribing rates paired with educational resources reduce inappropriate antibiotic use for URIs in the outpatient primary care setting.

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of molnupiravir for intra-household post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) of COVID-19.
Methods: MOVe-AHEAD was a randomized, controlled, double-blind, phase 3 trial comparing molnupiravir (800 mg twice daily for 5 days) with placebo. Eligible participants were adult, unvaccinated, asymptomatic household contacts of patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19.
Background: β-lactam antibiotics are amongst the most commonly prescribed medications in the Emergency Department (ED) due to their role in empiric sepsis therapy; however, inferior therapeutic options are often utilized due to a reported allergy; penicillin (PCN) being most frequent. In the United States, 10% of the population endorses an allergic reaction to PCN while <1% experience IgE-mediated reactions. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency and outcome of patients in the ED whose PCN allergies were challenged with β-lactam antibiotics.

Liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (LCTEM) is an emerging tool that can directly visualize nanoscale chemical transformations and therefore inform the precise synthesis of nanostructures with desired functions. However, it remains difficult to controllably investigate the reactions of semiconductor nanocrystals with LCTEM, because of the highly reactive environment formed by radiolysis of liquid.

CD24Fc is an immunomodulator with potential to reduce the exaggerated inflammatory response to tissue injuries. We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of CD24Fc in hospitalised adults with COVID-19 receiving oxygen support.

In order to streamline therapy, the patient received compassionate use cefiderocol for 6 weeks which was well tolerated. In addition, the patient's infection was considered cured at end of treatment.

The performance of conventional porous carbon electrodes often deteriorates quickly with the decrease of temperature due to sluggish ion and charge transport. Here we fabricate a 3D-printed multiscale porous carbon aerogel (3D-MCA) via a unique combination of chemical methods and the direct ink writing technique.

In addition, it has no Gram-positive activity, necessitating coadministration with vancomycin when used empirically, and is more costly when compared with other Gram-negative active agents. Aztreonam is often given to patients with a reported penicillin allergy without further investigation into the reaction or other relevant allergy information.

Aims: The aim of this study was to describe clinical characteristics and evaluate risk factors for developing LVAD infections, and examine outcomes of LVAD-specific infections (VSI) after OHT.
Methods: We retrospectively investigated the records of 74 consecutive patients at two institutions who had undergone LVAD placement and subsequent OHT between January 2007 and December 2012.
Background: Patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and/or chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection may be prescribed statins as treatment for metabolic/cardiovascular disease, but it remains unclear if the risk of acute liver injury (ALI) is increased for statin initiators compared to nonusers in groups classified by HIV/HCV status.
Methods: We conducted a cohort study to compare rates of ALI in statin initiators vs nonusers among 7686 HIV/HCV-coinfected, 8155 HCV-monoinfected, 17739 HIV-monoinfected, and 36604 uninfected persons in the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (2000-2012). We determined development of (1) liver aminotransferases >200 U/L, (2) severe ALI (coagulopathy with hyperbilirubinemia), and (3) death, all within 18 months.
Very high baseline HIV-1 RNA viral loads require potent and robust antiretroviral regimens to achieve virological suppression. The coformulated single tablet regimen of elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (EVG/COBI/FTC/TDF) is recommended by the US Department of Health and Human Services for the treatment of HIV-1 in treatment-naive adults and adolescents regardless of baseline CD4(+) T-cell count and viral load. We report two cases of HIV-infected, treatment-naive patients, with baseline HIV-1 RNA viral loads >1,000,000 copies/ml who were initiated on the single tablet regimen EVG/COBI/FTC/TDF, but failed to attain viral load suppression and developed resistance to the components of EVG/COBI/FTC/TDF.

Our objectives were to determine whether untreated or treated CHB-infected persons are at increased risk for hip fracture compared to uninfected persons.
Methods: We conducted a cohort study among 18,796 untreated CHB-infected, 7777 treated CHB-infected, and 979,751 randomly sampled uninfected persons within the U.
Purpose: Few population-based studies have estimated the number of persons diagnosed with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infection in the United States. Our objective was to estimate the prevalence of diagnosed CHB infection among persons enrolled in the U.S.

In both tasks, participants were responsible for memory of the material either studied or generated. The experiments revealed significant differences between the responses of a predefined prefrontal region and a predefined parietal region.
