Misfortune and Mistake: The Financial Conditions and Decision-making Ability of High-Cost Loan Borrowers.

The appropriateness of many high-cost loan regulations depends on whether demand is driven by financial conditions ("misfortunes") or imperfect decisions ("mistakes"). Bank records from Iceland show borrowers have especially low liquidity just before getting a loan. Borrowers exhibit lower decision-making ability (DMA) in linked choice experiments: 45% of loan dollars go to the bottom 20% of the DMA distribution.

Complexity and Sophistication.

Many financial situations present individuals with simple alternatives to solving complex problems. The value of these alternatives depends on whether individuals are sophisticated and know when they are better off opting out of complexity. We tested complexity's effects and evaluated sophistication in a large and diverse sample.

Microeconomics. Harnessing naturally occurring data to measure the response of spending to income.

This paper presents a new data infrastructure for measuring economic activity. The infrastructure records transactions and account balances, yielding measurements with scope and accuracy that have little precedent in economics. The data are drawn from a diverse population that overrepresents males and younger adults but contains large numbers of underrepresented groups.

Consumption, Retirement and Social Security: Evaluating the Efficiency of Reform that Encourages Longer Careers.

This paper proposes and analyzes a Social Security reform in which individuals no longer face the OASI payroll tax after, say, age 54 or a career of 34 years, and their subsequent earnings have no bearing on their benefits. We first estimate parameters of a life-cycle model. Our specification includes non-separable preferences and possible disability.

S-Methadone augments R-methadone induced respiratory depression in the neonatal guinea pig.

Methadone is administered as a racemic mixture, although its analgesic and respiratory effects are attributed to R-isomer activity at the mu opioid receptor (MOP). Recently, we observed a four-fold increase in inspiratory time in 3-day-old guinea pigs following an injection of racemic methadone. We hypothesized that this effect was due to augmentation of R-methadone induced respiratory depression by the S-methadone isomer.

Are mature smokers misinformed?

While there are many reasons to continue to smoke in spite of its consequences for health, the concern that many smoke because they misperceive the risks of smoking remains a focus of public discussion and motivates tobacco control policies and litigation. In this paper we investigate the relative accuracy of mature smokers' risk perceptions about future survival, and a range of morbidities and disabilities. Using data from the survey on smoking (SOS) conducted for this research, we compare subjective beliefs elicited from the SOS with corresponding individual-specific objective probabilities estimated from the health and retirement study.

Weight-based dosing of Yttrium 90 ibritumomab tiuxetan in patients with relapsed or refractory B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Background: Ibritumomab tiuxetan radioimmunotherapy produces durable remissions in patients with relapsed/refractory indolent non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The dosing of Yttrium 90 (90Y)-ibritumomab tiuxetan is based on patient weight and platelet count: 0.4 mCi/kg in patients with a count >or= 150 x 10(9)/L, to a maximum dose of 32 mCi.

Time preference, time discounting, and smoking decisions.

This study examines the relationship between time discounting, other sources of time preference, and choices about smoking. Using a survey fielded for our analysis, we elicit rates of time discount from choices in financial and health domains. We also examine the relationship between other determinants of time preference and smoking status.

Verbal memory retrieval deficits associated with untreated hypothyroidism.

The effects of inadequate thyroid hormone availability to the brain on adult cognitive function are poorly understood. This study assessed the effects of hypothyroidism on cognitive function using a standard neuropsychological battery in 14 patients suffering from untreated hypothyroidism and complaining of subjective cognitive difficulties in comparison with 10 age-matched healthy comparison subjects. Significant differences between groups were limited to verbal memory retrieval as measured by the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT).

Memory improvement with treatment of hypothyroidism.

The consequences of inadequate thyroid hormone availability to the brain and treatment effects of levothyroxine on cognitive function are still poorly understood. This study prospectively assessed the effects of thyroid replacement therapy on cognitive function in patients suffering from biochemical evidenced, untreated hypothyroidism. Significant effects between the untreated hypothyroid group and control group were limited to verbal memory retrieval.
