This study established a suitable animal model of ovariohysterectomy; characterized the course and pattern of vaginal healing after ovariohysterectomy; and compared healing obtained after closure of the vaginal cuff with a novel cuff-closure device (Zip-stitch® clips) and VICRYL sutures. This prospective, randomized, controlled, blinded animal study was conducted in 27 mongrel hounds according to an IACUC-approved protocol. Each animal underwent ovariohysterectomy followed by vaginal cuff closure with Zip-stitch or VICRYL.

Solid-state deformation processing is a promising technique for modifying the physical and mechanical properties of highly crosslinked ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) beyond simple thermal treatment cycles that have been employed previously. This study evaluates anisotropy and oxidative resistance in a novel, radiation crosslinked (50 kGy) UHMWPE material (ArComXL: Biomet, Inc., Warsaw, IN), incorporating solid-state, deformation processing by extrusion below the melt transition for application in total hip arthroplasty.

The protein, phospholipid and hyaluronic acid (HA) contents of joint fluid samples were determined in specimens obtained from patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and revision TKA. It was hypothesized that these components would vary widely among patients undergoing TKA, and that the composition of joint fluid in patients undergoing revision would differ from that in patients undergoing revision. It was further hypothesized that HA concentration and molecular weight would principally determine the flow properties previously reported.

While the properties of joint fluid may affect the tribology of joint replacement prostheses, the flow parameters of joint fluid have not yet been examined in the context of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The objective of this study was to evaluate the flow properties of joint fluids in patients undergoing index TKA or revision TKA.
