Mesoporous bioactive glass (MBG) has a high specific surface area, promoting the reaction area, thereby improving the bioactivity; thus, MBG is currently gaining popularity in the biomaterial field. Spray pyrolysis (SP) is a one-pot process that has the advantages of shorter process time and better particle bioactivity, therefore, MBG was prepared by SP process with various polyethylene glycol (PEG, molecular weight ranged from 2000-12,000) and acid (HCl and CHCOOH) additions. In vitro bioactivity and mesoporous properties of the so-obtained MBG were investigated.

Using a novel microwave-assisted hydrothermal (MW) process we created nano-scale anatase on micro-arc-oxidized (MAO) titanium surface. The morphology/crystallinity and surface potential of the anatase which altered by Ca/P ions concentrations and pH in the MW medium were characterized by atomic force microscopy, Kelvin probe force microscopy, Raman spectrometer, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The surface of MWDD (processed in DD water) and MWCP (in neutral pH medium with Ca/P ions) are covered with anatase spikes, which enhance their nano-roughness, hydrophilicity, and possess lower surface potential than other groups.

Nano to submicron scaled surface possesses excellent biological affinity and several processes have been undertaken to develop titanium implant with specific surface chemical and phase composition and nano-scale features. A simple process was used to modify the nano topographies on a micro-arc-oxidation (MAO) surface which shortens the time for the conventional hydrothermal process (HT). Nano-scaled anatase precipitates on the MAO surface with different crystallinities and morphologies were regulated via microwave-assisted hydrothermal in pure water (MWDD) or in pH conditioned mediums containing calcium and phosphorus ions (MWCP, MWCP9, MWCP11).
