An estimated three million shipwrecks exist worldwide and are recognized as cultural resources and foci of archaeological investigations. Shipwrecks also support ecological resources by providing underwater habitats that can be colonized by diverse organisms ranging from microbes to megafauna. In the present article, we review the emerging ecological subdiscipline of shipwreck ecology, which aims to understand ecological functions and processes that occur on shipwrecks.

Artificial features including shipwrecks and energy infrastructure shape the biogeographic patterns of macro-organisms; how they influence microorganisms is unclear. Shipwrecks may function as islands of biodiversity for microbiomes, creating a patchwork of habitats with influence radiating out into the seabed.

Background: The Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals (MIREC) Study was established to obtain Canadian biomonitoring data for pregnant women and their infants, and to examine potential adverse health effects of prenatal exposure to priority environmental chemicals on pregnancy and infant health.
Methods: Women were recruited during the first trimester from 10 sites across Canada and were followed through delivery. Questionnaires were administered during pregnancy and post-delivery to collect information on demographics, occupation, life style, medical history, environmental exposures and diet.
Lead is neurotoxic at very low dose and there is a need to better characterize the impact of domestic sources of lead on the biological exposure of young children. A cross-sectional survey evaluated the contribution of drinking water, house dust and paint to blood lead levels (BLLs) of young children living in old boroughs of Montréal (Canada). Three hundred and six children aged 1 to 5 years and currently drinking tap water participated in the study.

The objective of this study was to use MRS to monitor the effect of minocycline treatment (200 mg/day) over a short period (6 weeks) on the brain metabolites in the precentral gyrus and brainstem in newly diagnosed ALS patients.
Methods: Ten ALS patients (not on riluzole treatment) were recruited and submitted to single-voxel proton MRS longitudinal examinations (1) before minocycline treatment, (2) 3 weeks and (3) 6 weeks after initiation of treatment.
Recently, chromogranins were reported to interact specifically with mutant forms of superoxide dismutase that are linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This interaction led us to analyze the frequencies of sequence variants of the CHGB gene in ALS patients and matched controls from three different countries. Oxidative stress is considered one of the mechanisms involved in ALS pathogenesis. Evidence for this includes the fact that mutations of SOD1, which normally reduce the production of toxic superoxide anion, account for 12% to 23% of familial cases in ALS.

As part of a series of studies to address these issues, the effects of moderate drinking (60-90 g ethanol per day) or heavy drinking (> 100 g ethanol per day) on peripheral nervous function and thiamine status was measured in 73 patients admitted to a detoxification unit. Electromyographic evaluation revealed significant reductions in median and ulnar sensory and motor nerve conduction velocities in both moderate drinkers (n = 30) and heavy drinkers (n = 43) compared to age-matched controls.

A subchronic rat study with paired-water control was conducted to resolve the question of whether monochloramine at 200 ppm in drinking water can cause reduced body weight gain and other changes observed in earlier investigations. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (93 +/- 5 g) were divided into three groups of 10 rats each: the treatment group was fed drinking water containing 200 ppm monochloramine, the control group was fed bicarbonate-buffered water ad libitum, and the paired-water control rats were given a daily volume of bicarbonate-buffered water equal to that consumed by the monochloramine treatment group. Compared to the control group, rats in the treatment group consumed an average of 42% less fluid and 16% less food over the 13-week treatment period and had 15-20% lower final body weight gain.

Sural nerve conduction and late response latencies were recorded in addition to conventional motor and sensory nerve conductions. After six months of hemodialysis, sensory nerve conduction velocities in the median, ulnar and sural nerves were improved.
