This paper presents a noise propagation approach based on the Gaussian beam tracing (GBT) method that accounts for multiple reflections over three-dimensional terrain topology and atmospheric refraction due to horizontal and vertical variability in wind velocity. A semi-empirical formulation is derived to reduce truncation error in the beam summation for receivers on the terrain surfaces. The reliability of the present GBT approach is assessed with an acoustic solver based on the finite element method (FEM) solutions of the convected wave equation.

Noise sources, obtained using the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings acoustic analogy applied to scale-resolved flow simulation data, are stored on a hemisphere surrounding the vehicle. These noise sources are propagated using a propagation model that takes into account the vertical variability of air temperature and wind velocity.

Time-resolved simulations present a new opportunity for studying the disturbances responsible for the broadband interaction noise created by the fan stage. In this paper, two vane configurations from the source diagnostic test at the approach rotor speed were computed with PowerFLOW's very large-eddy simulation (VLES) method using two solution strategies: a coarser mesh near the rotor and a trip to trigger turbulent transition on the rotor; and a much finer mesh near the rotor with no trip. The simulated data allow for an investigation of the potential effect from the vane configuration and an in-depth study of the mean and turbulent flow in the interstage gap.

However, the achieved noise mitigation is typically dependent upon the pore geometry, which is fixed after manufacturing. In this study, a step to control the aeroacoustics effect of such porous trailing edges is taken, by applying a polymeric coating onto the internal foam structure.

Two hybrid RANS/LES codes coupled with Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings solvers are used to calculate 97 microphone signals at the locations of an array employed in the NASA LaRC 14×22 tunnel. Conventional, DAMAS, and CLEAN-SC array processing is applied in an identical fashion to the experimental and computational results for three different configurations involving deploying and retracting the main landing gear and a part-span flap.
