Background: Black birthing people in the United States are disproportionately impacted by maternal mortality and more frequently report physical and verbal mistreatment during intrapartum care. Birth plans for prenatal and postpartum care promote autonomy and agency but have not been used as tools to address disparities in perinatal care.

Methods: We reviewed the literature on the use of birth plans and communication in the pregnancy care setting.

Maternal mortality improvement depends on the proper classification used in defining maternal deaths. Since there are several definitions of maternal deaths depending upon the proximate cause of the death, if the death is related to the physiologic changes during pregnancy or not and the timing of the death, some opportunities for improvement may be missed to decrease the overall maternal mortality rate in the USA if the correct definition is not utilized appropriately.

Primary lymphoma of the ovary, particularly in an HIV-positive woman, is exceptionally rare, and ovarian lymphoma may not be considered at the time of intraoperative consultation. In this article, we present a case in an HIV-positive woman thought to be a dysgerminoma at the time of frozen section, but which was found to be a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the ovary.
