Consistent evidence that brain serotonin 2A receptor binding is positively associated with personality-based risk markers of depression.

Background: Using [F]altanserin, a serotonin 2A receptor (5-HTR) antagonist Positron Emission Tomography (PET) tracer, a positive association between cortical 5-HTR binding and the inward-directed facets of neuroticism has been demonstrated in healthy individuals. Psilocybin, a 5-HTR agonist, shows promise for the treatment of depression, reducing neuroticism and mood symptoms potentially via hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) modulation. 5-HTR and neuroticism are both modulated by HPA axis function.

Vimentin molecular linkages with nesprin-3 enhance nuclear deformations by cell geometric constraints.

The nucleus is the organelle of the cell responsible for controlling protein expression, which has a direct effect on cellular biological functions. Here we show that the cytoskeletal protein vimentin plays an important role in increasing cell-generated forces transmitted to the cell nucleus, resulting in increased nuclear deformations in strongly polarized cells. Using micropatterned substrates to geometrically control cell shape in wild-type and vimentin-null cells, we show vimentin increases polarization and deformation of the cell nucleus.

Targeting Cognitive Resilience through Prebiotics: A Focused Perspective.

This perspective article is a product of the work of an expert group within the Prebiotic Task Force convened by the International Life Sciences Institute Europe, a non-profit organization that brings together experts from academia, industry, and public service to catalyze nutrition science for public benefit. An expert group was conceived in October 2023 to discuss the evidence base on the use of prebiotics to promote cognitive functioning, with a focus on highlighting knowledge gaps and proposing a list of recommendations to guide this specific area of research forward. To address this, we evaluated existing systematic reviews and meta-analyses of human intervention studies that examine the effects of prebiotics on cognitive functioning.

The water channels aquaporin-1 and aquaporin-3 interact with and affect the cell polarity protein Scribble in 3D in vitro models of breast cancer.

Cellular changes in carcinomas include alterations in cell proliferation, cell migration, cell-cell adhesion, and cellular polarity. In vitro studies have revealed that the water channels, aquaporin-1 (AQP1) and AQP3, can influence cell migration and cell-cell adhesion. Of note, we previously showed that AQP1 overexpression reduced levels of cell-cell adhesion proteins, whereas AQP3 increased levels when overexpressed in normal epithelial cells.

A grassroots approach to peer support by the Danish Reproducibility Network.

The Danish Reproducibility Network (DKRN) is a grassroots initiative for establishing a peer-supportive reproducibility-focused academic network in Denmark. We modelled our approach on already existing national Reproducibility Networks. We consulted with researchers and research support professionals to identify the needs of the research community.

Effect of Antidepressant Treatment on 5-HT Receptor Binding and Associations With Clinical Outcomes and Verbal Memory in Major Depressive Disorder.

Background: Brain serotonin 4 receptor (5-HTR) levels are lower in untreated patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and are linked to verbal memory. Here, we investigated the relationship between 5-HTR levels, clinical outcomes, and cognitive function in patients with MDD who initiated selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor drug treatment.

Methods: Ninety patients with moderate to severe depression underwent molecular brain imaging to measure 5-HTR binding prior to antidepressant treatment with escitalopram.

An In Vivo High-Resolution Human Brain Atlas of Synaptic Density.

Synapses are fundamental to the function of the central nervous system and are implicated in a number of brain disorders. Despite their pivotal role, a comprehensive imaging resource detailing the distribution of synapses in the human brain has been lacking until now. Here, we employ high-resolution PET neuroimaging in healthy humans (17F/16M) to create a 3D atlas of the synaptic marker Synaptic Vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A).

Rumination in patients with major depressive disorder before and after antidepressant treatment.

Background: Rumination is a maladaptive response to distress characteristic of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). It is unclear to what degree rumination is associated with depression severity prior to treatment and how it responds to antidepressant treatment. Therefore, we evaluated the association between rumination and depression severity in 92 untreated patients with MDD and explored the changes in rumination after initiation of antidepressant medication.

No association between peripheral serotonin-gene-related DNA methylation and brain serotonin neurotransmission in the healthy and depressed state.

Background: Methylation of serotonin-related genes has been proposed as a plausible gene-by-environment link which may mediate environmental stress, depressive and anxiety symptoms. DNA methylation is often measured in blood cells, but little is known about the association between this peripheral epigenetic modification and brain serotonergic architecture. Here, we evaluated the association between whole-blood-derived methylation of four CpG sites in the serotonin transporter (SLC6A4) and six CpG sites of the tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2) gene and in-vivo brain levels of serotonin transporter (5-HTT) and serotonin 4 receptor (5-HT) in a cohort of healthy individuals (N = 254) and, for 5-HT in a cohort of unmedicated patients with depression (N = 90).

Nasal Sebaceous Carcinoma - A Rare Presentation.

Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a slow-growing but aggressive malignant skin tumour derived from sebaceous glands. SC most commonly occurs in the periocular region, whereas extraocular sites are rare. SC of the nasal dorsum is a rare pathology, and only a few cases are reported worldwide.

Background: Understanding childbirth delivery and pain relief method preferences is important as a part of the shared decision-making process between pregnant women and health professionals. This study aimed to examine the preferences for childbirth delivery modes and pain relief methods and factors related to these preferences among pregnant women in Vietnam.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey on pregnant women was conducted in two obstetrics hospitals in Vietnam.

Background: Oxytocin is a neuropeptide known for its prosocial properties and role in social bonding, and intervention with intranasal oxytocin is posited to modulate affective and social cognition (i.e., hot cognition).

Avoidance of healthcare service use and correlates among HIV-positive patients in Vietnam: a cross-sectional study.

Objective: The prevention of HIV/AIDS is not making sufficient progress. The slow reduction of HIV/AIDS infections needs to prioritise hesitancy towards service utilisation, including treatment duration, social support and social stigma. This study investigates HIV-positive patients' avoidance of healthcare services and its correlates.

EEG abnormalities are not associated with poor antidepressant treatment outcome - A NeuroPharm study.

EEG brain abnormalities, such as slowing and isolated epileptiform discharges (IEDs), has previously been associated with non-response to antidepressant treatment with escitalopram and venlafaxine, suggesting a potential need for treatment with anticonvulsant property in some patients. The current study aims to replicate the reported association of EEG abnormality and treatment outcomes in an open-label trial of escitalopram for major depressive disorder (MDD) and explore its relationship to mood and cognition. Pretreatment, 6 min eyes-closed resting-state 256-channel EEG was recorded in 91 patients with MDD (age 18-57) who were treated with 10-20 mg escitalopram for 12 weeks; patients could switch to duloxetine after four weeks.

Patients' perspectives on tapering programmes for prescription opioid use disorder: a qualitative study.

Objectives: Approximately 10% of chronic pain patients who receive opioids develop an opioid use disorder (OUD). Tapering programmes for these patients show high drop-out rates. Insight into chronic pain patients' experiences with tapering programmes for prescription OUD could help improve such programmes.

The shuttling of renal collecting duct aquaporin-2 (AQP2) between intracellular vesicles and the apical plasma membrane is paramount for regulation of renal water reabsorption. The binding of the circulating antidiuretic hormone arginine vasopressin (AVP) to the basolateral AVP receptor increases intracellular cAMP, which ultimately leads to AQP2 plasma membrane accumulation via a dual effect on AQP2 vesicle fusion with the apical plasma membrane and reduced AQP2 endocytosis. This AQP2 plasma membrane accumulation increases water reabsorption and consequently urine concentration.

The Rhinoplasty Health Care Monitor: An Update on the Practical and Clinical Benefits after 10 Years of Prospective Outcome Measurements.

The era of value-based health care is characterized by an increasing interest in patient-reported health outcomes. For this purpose we developed the rhinoplasty health care monitor (RHM), a streamlined outcome measurement protocol, including all rhinoplasty patients since 2014. Statistical analyses of patient-reported outcome data are automated and visually presented on a custom web-based dashboard.

Structural Equation Model for Social Support and Quality of Life Among Individuals With Mental Health Disorders During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background: In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the distribution of social support for mental health problems has likely become unequal. Family- and community-based social support has been recognized as a promising approach for mental disorders; however, limited global frameworks have been applied to developing countries such as Vietnam.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life and social support among patients with mental health disorders in Vietnam and to investigate the factors associated with quality of life among these patients.

Social networking is proliferating globally and in Vietnam, but this led to several negative aspects of adolescents' health, including physical activity, sleep quality, and depressive and anxiety symptoms. This study aimed to identify the relationship between social media usage and examine risk factors (Fear of Missing out and Risk of Neglect) on social media usage, and the overall quality of life and mental health among individuals actively using social media networks. An online cross-sectional study was conducted in three cities in Vietnam (Hanoi, Tuyen Quang, and Can Tho) from September through to October 2021.

Recurrent reactive infectious mucocutaneous eruption in a male adult patient associated with , SARS-CoV-2 and rhinovirus.

We present a case of a man in his early 30s who developed four episodes of reactive infectious mucocutaneous eruption (RIME), in association with different infectious pathogens.RIME is a recently implemented term to describe mucocutaneous eruptions associated with respiratory pathogens. These eruptions are characterised by predominant mucosal involvement of two or more mucous membranes and limited cutaneous involvement.

Impacts of COVID-19 on career choices in health professionals and medical students.

Backgrounds: The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in not only significant mortalities in Vietnam but has had an impact on its economy. Previous studies have highlighted how the pandemic has had a marginal impact on Vietnamese healthcare workers working at the frontlines. To date, there have been several other studies examining the impact of COVID-19 on intentions to transition between jobs among healthcare professionals, but this has yet to be explored amongst Vietnamese healthcare workers.
