Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate the role of γδ T cells in regulating natural killer (NK) cells during herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) infection in the cornea.
  • Experimental methods included infecting different mouse models, performing treatments, and conducting flow cytometry and RNA sequencing to analyze immune responses.
  • Results showed that mice without γδ T cells had fewer NK cells and lower antiviral cytokines, while γδ T17 cells were crucial for NK cell accumulation, also influencing IL-17A production through an interplay with IFN-γ.

In 2016 the Choosing Wisely guidelines advised against routine performance of a sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in women ≥ 70 years of age with clinically node negative (cN0), early-stage, oestrogen receptor positive/ human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative (ER+/HER2-), invasive breast cancer. The argument in favour of its continued performance is that it may serve as a useful guide for subsequent management. This systematic review was performed in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines.

Article Synopsis
  • Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) injuries are a major type of shoulder injury, making up over 40% of cases, and this study explores the top 50 most cited articles on ACJ instability.
  • The research shows a rise in studies over time, with most articles being classified as Level IV evidence, focusing on treatment outcomes primarily for male patients, and reflecting wide variations in citation counts.
  • Conclusions indicate that while ACJ instability research is growing, it is mostly published by a few institutions and journals, has low scientific quality, and lacks sufficient data on female patient outcomes.

Background: There have been ongoing attempts to de-escalate surgical intervention in older breast cancer patients in recent years. However, there remains ongoing hesitancy amongst surgeons to de-implement axillary staging in this cohort. The supporting argument for performing a sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is that it may guide subsequent management.

Most packages for the analysis of fMRI-based functional connectivity (FC) and genomic data are used with a programming language interface, lacking an easy-to-navigate GUI frontend. This exacerbates two problems found in these types of data: demographic confounds and quality control in the face of high dimensionality of features. The reason is that it is too slow and cumbersome to use a programming interface to create all the necessary visualizations required to identify all correlations, confounding effects, or quality control problems in a dataset.

Background: Mental health problems affect 1 in 6 workers annually and are one of the leading causes of sickness absence, with stress, anxiety, and depression being responsible for half of all working days lost in the United Kingdom. Primary interventions with a preventative focus are widely acknowledged as the priority for workplace mental health interventions. Line managers hold a primary role in preventing poor mental health within the workplace and, therefore, need to be equipped with the skills and knowledge to effectively carry out this role.

Background: Managing long-term sickness absence is challenging in countries where employers and managers have the main responsibility to provide return to work support, particularly for workers with poor mental health. Whilst long-term sick leave and return to work frameworks and guidance exist for employers, there are currently no structured return to work protocols for employers or for their workers encompassing best practice strategies to support a positive and timely return to work outcome.

Purpose: To utilise the intervention mapping (IM) protocol as a framework to develop return to work toolkits that are underpinned by relevant behaviour change theory targeting mental health to promote a positive return to work experiensce for workers on long-term sick leave.

The phycosphere is a unique niche that fosters complex interactions between microalgae and associated bacteria. The formation of this extracellular environment, and the associated bacterial biodiversity, is heavily influenced by the secretion of extracellular polymers, primarily driven by phototrophic organisms. The exopolysaccharides (EPS) represent the largest fraction of the microalgae-derived exudates, which can be specifically used by heterotrophic bacteria as substrates for metabolic processes.
