During SARS-CoV-2 infection, eosinopenia may reflect a hyperactive immune response. In this study of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, we aimed to better understand the prognostic value of severe eosinopenia (absolute eosinophil count = 0 G/L) and decipher its underlying mechanisms. We retrospectively analyzed the records of COVID-19 patients hospitalized from March to June 2020 in three university hospitals in Marseille, France.

Background: Universal coverage with long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) is an essential component of malaria control programmes. Three-yearly mass distribution of LLINs in Papua New Guinea (PNG) has been successful in reducing infection transmission since 2009, but malaria prevalence ramped up from 2015 onwards. Although LLIN universal coverage is mostly achieved during these campaigns, it may not be related with net use over time.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated immediate hypersensitivity reactions (IH) to iodinated and gadolinium-based contrast media (ICM; GBCM), focusing on differentiating between allergic and non-allergic responses, which is crucial for future medical treatment decisions.
  • - Over 245 patients were analyzed through skin tests and other clinical evaluations, revealing an allergic reaction rate of 19.6% for ICM and 27.8% for GBCM, with notable cross-reactivity among patients.
  • - The findings indicated that allergic IH was linked to more severe reactions and quicker onset than non-allergic IH, highlighting the need for more sensitive skin testing methods to better identify allergic responses to contrast agents.

Article Synopsis
  • The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) focuses on conserving ecosystems, species, and genetic diversity, which is essential for maintaining ecosystem function.
  • Genetic diversity is often overlooked in conservation strategies since it’s hard to measure and assumed to correlate with species richness, but this assumption has not been rigorously tested.
  • A study of the high-mountain flora in the Alps and Carpathians revealed that species richness and genetic diversity do not correlate, indicating that species richness should not be used as a proxy for genetic diversity in conservation planning.

Eighty-seven male volunteers were grouped according to bone age (BA): 10-12 years (n=25), 13-15 years (n=36), and 16-18 years (n=26), and the following were recorded for each: weight (kg), height (m), BMI (kg/m(2)), calcium intake from three 24-h food recalls (mg/day), puberty evaluation by Tanner stages, bone biomarker (BB) evaluation, serum osteocalcin (OC), bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP), carboxyterminal telopeptide (S-CTx), and bone mineral density (BMD) evaluations by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (g x cm(2)) in the lumbar spine, proximal femur, and the whole body. BBs showed similar behaviors, and very high median values were observed for individuals aged 13-15 years (BAP = 155.50 IU/L, OC = 41.

Objective: To evaluate the behavior of biomarkers of bone formation and resorption in healthy male Brazilian adolescents according to their biological maturation.

Methods: Eighty-seven volunteers were divided into age groups according to bone age (BA): 10-12 years (n = 25), 13-15 years (n = 36), and 16-18 years (n = 26). Weight (kg), height (m), body mass index (kg/m(2)), calcium intake from 3 days assessed by 24-h food recall (mg/day), pubertal event evaluation by Tanner criteria, and serum biomarker levels (osteocalcin [OC] [ng/mL], bone alkaline phosphatase [BAP] [U/L], and serum carboxyterminal telopeptide [S-CTx] [ng/mL]) were recorded and correlated to bone mineral density (BMD) (g/cm(2)) measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry of the lumbar spine, proximal femur, and whole body.

Osteoporosis is considered one of the most serious public health diseases and studies show that it is a pediatric disease that manifests during senility. It is usually diagnosed in clinical practice by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). This exam has a high cost and it is difficult to apply to a pediatric population because specific equipment and special software are required.
