Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19 triage protocols are developed to manage resource shortages in ICUs and have sparked ethical debates, particularly regarding potential biases against certain groups based on age, frailty, or perceived social value.
  • The online Democratic Deliberation conducted in May and June 2022 in Quebec and Ontario aimed to gather public opinions on acceptable considerations and values that should guide these protocols.
  • Analysis revealed three main themes: the need for public acceptance of the protocols, essential considerations to include in triage decisions, and conditions that could enhance acceptance, with participants generally favoring prioritization based on survival prognosis and advocating for structured decision-making to reduce subjectivity.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous long-term care (LTC) homes faced restrictions that prevented face-to-face visits. To address this challenge and maintain family connections, many LTC homes facilitated the use of electronic tablets to connect residents with their family caregivers. Our study sought to explore the acceptability of this practice among staff members and managers, focusing on their experiences with facilitating videoconferencing.

Background: The prioritization protocols for accessing adult critical care in the extreme pandemic context contain tiebreaker criteria to facilitate decision-making in the allocation of resources between patients with a similar survival prognosis. Besides being controversial, little is known about the public acceptability of these tiebreakers. In order to better understand the public opinion, Quebec and Ontario's protocols were presented to the public in a democratic deliberation during the summer of 2022.

Moral or ethical questions are vital because they affect our daily lives: what is the best choice we can make, the best action to take in a given situation, and ultimately, the best way to live our lives? Health ethics has contributed to moving ethics toward a more experience-based and user-oriented theoretical and methodological stance but remains in our practice an incomplete lever for human development and flourishing. This context led us to envision and develop the stance of a "living ethics", described in this inaugural collective and programmatic paper as an effort to consolidate creative collaboration between a wide array of stakeholders. We engaged in a participatory discussion and collective writing process known as instrumentalist concept analysis.

In France, successive reforms in nursing education have resulted in a 90 % reduction in hours of theoretical instruction in clinical psychopathology since 1972. As a result, novice nurses in psychiatry feel that they have not received sufficient theoretical training at the beginning of their careers. This particularly affects their ability to search for reliable data in order to guide and orient their clinical judgment.

Living labs are interdisciplinary and participatory initiatives aimed at bringing research closer to practice by involving stakeholders in all stages of research. Living labs align with the principles of participatory research methods as well as recent insights about how participatory ways of generating knowledge help to change practices in concrete settings with respect to specific problems. The participatory, open, and discussion-oriented nature of living labs could be ideally suited to accompany ethical reflection and changes ensuing from reflection.

Background: The latest global figures show that 55 million persons lived with major neurocognitive disorders (MNCDs) worldwide in 2021. In Quebec, Canada, most of these older adults are cared for by family physicians in interdisciplinary primary care clinics such as family medicine groups (FMG). When a person has a MNCD, taking potentially inappropriate medications or polypharmacy (5 different medications or more) increases their vulnerability to serious adverse events.

This analysis of Fawcett’s ideas will situate the role played by her model in the discipline in relation to its organization of knowledge and its role in the move to institutionalize the nursing discipline. By providing an in-depth epistemological analysis, locating the relationships between this concept and Popper’s work, and showing how Fawcett draws on a specific vision of science, the article presents a fresh look at the model while situating it within its assumptions. It also addresses some of its limitations and draws conclusions about its role in the move to institutionalize the nursing discipline.

Since 2008, an international group has been helping to promote a better response to the fundamental needs of individuals receiving care. This group provides a framework on the fundamentals of care that focuses on the relationship between the nurse, the individual being cared for, and his or her relatives, as well as on the response to the patient’s physical, psychosocial, and relational needs. A practice process supports the concrete application of this framework.
