Background: Tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy are surgical procedures routinely performed worldwide, with various complications, including postoperative bleeding (PTH). Among haemostatic agents, bismuth subgallate (BS) has been employed in the past decades, but its use is controversial in children.

Objective: This retrospective, multicentre study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of BS in preventing PTH following tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy.

Background: Hemoglobinopathies are the commonest genetic defect worldwide (7% of the world's population has at least one hemoglobin mutation). Although prenatal screening for hemoglobinopathies is not obligatory during pregnancy in Italy, it is offered to women by the Italian National Health Service in the pre-conception phase. The screening of newborns is a valid alternative, and has been adopted in various European countries, albeit in a piecemeal fashion.

Background: The first Covid-19 pandemic affected the epidemiology of several diseases. A general reduction in the emergency department (ED) accesses was observed during this period, both in adult and pediatric contexts.

Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on the behalf of the Italian Society of Pediatric Nephrology (SINePe) in 17 Italian pediatric EDs in March and April 2020, comparing them with data from the same periods in 2018 and 2019.

Background: While hematological symptoms are considered difficult to manage in a Pediatric Palliative Care setting, home may still represent a safe and convenient place for transfusions in patients with advanced malignancy or chronic conditions. This research focuses on the safety and feasibility of a home transfusion program.

Methods: This is a case series of patients between 0 and 18 years diagnosed with advanced malignancy or incurable chronic conditions and eligible to Pediatric Palliative Care who received home platelet or packed red cell transfusions.

Background: Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES) is a non IgE-mediated food allergy that generally affects children in the first year of life. Usually symptoms break out when formula milk or solid foods are introduced for the first time but they might also appear in exclusively breastfed infants, since the trigger elements, especially cow's milk proteins, can be conveyed by maternal milk as well. FPIES in exclusively breastfed babies is a very rare clinical condition and only few cases have been reported in the medical literature.

Purpose: To determine the presence of sickle cell retinopathy and maculopathy and to identify associations between markers of hemolysis and systemic and ocular manifestations in children affected by sickle cell disease.

Methods: Eighteen children with sickle cell disease, aged 5-16 years, underwent complete eye examination including best-corrected visual acuity, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, ophthalmoscopy after pharmacological mydriasis, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Blood test results and clinical history information were collected for each child, including fetal hemoglobin (HbF), hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Htc), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), reticulocytes percentage (%ret), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), total and direct bilirubin, glomerular filtration rate, number of painful crises, acute chest syndromes, and splenic sequestration.

Sleep disturbance is a crucial issue in pediatric palliative care, with a dramatic impact on the quality of life of children and families. Dexmedetomidine (DEX) is a selective α-2 agonist, with anxiolytic, hypnotic, and analgesic properties, that could play a role in the management of refractory sleep disturbances. We describe the use of intranasal DEX as a sleep inductor in a 10-year-old female with dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa and a severe sleep disorder.

Objective: To evaluate the yield, economic, and radiation costs of 5 diagnostic algorithms compared with a protocol where all tests are performed (ultrasonography scan, cystography, and late technetium(99)dimercaptosuccinic acid scan) in children after the first febrile urinary tract infections.

Methods: A total of 304 children, 2 to 36 months of age, who completed the diagnostic follow-up (ultrasonography, cystourethrography, and acute and late technetium(99)dimercaptosuccinic acid scans) of a randomized controlled trial (Italian Renal Infection Study 1) were eligible. The guidelines applied to this cohort in a retrospective simulation were: Melbourne Royal Children's Hospital, National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), top down approach, American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and Italian Society of Pediatric Nephrology.
