Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how machine learning can predict the accuracy of diagnoses made by pathologists based on their viewing habits while analyzing digital breast biopsy images.
  • The research involved 140 pathologists who reviewed 14 digital images, with their viewing behaviors tracked to extract key features that informed machine learning algorithms used for predicting diagnostic accuracy.
  • The Random Forest algorithm was the most effective, achieving 81% accuracy, and highlighted the significance of attention-focused behaviors, suggesting that these insights could enhance training and clinical practices by providing automated feedback in diagnosis.

Students learn more effectively through repeated retrieval of study materials relative to repeated exposure to the materials, a phenomenon known as the testing effect or retrieval practice. This pattern has been demonstrated repeatedly with verbal materials, and more recently with visuospatial materials. The extent to which retrieval practice produces spatial memories that successfully transfer to more diverse task demands remains unknown.
