Background: Ultrasound-guided nerve block can be used for perioperative analgesia and can potentially improve the course of recovery. Although iliohypogastric-ilioinguinal nerve block has been successfully used for inguinal hernia surgery, the poor blocking effect of intraoperative traction reflex remains a major drawback of this technique. The main objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of single-point ultrasound-guided iliohypogastric-ilioinguinal-genitofemoral nerve (GFN) blockage for open anterior inguinal hernia repair in older adults.

Targeting Fascin1 maintains chondrocytes phenotype and attenuates osteoarthritis development.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritic disease, and phenotypic modification of chondrocytes is an important mechanism that contributes to the loss of cartilage homeostasis. This study identified that Fascin actin-bundling protein 1 (FSCN1) plays a pivotal role in regulating chondrocytes phenotype and maintaining cartilage homeostasis. Proteome-wide screening revealed markedly upregulated FSCN1 protein expression in human OA cartilage.

Elasto-inertial particle focusing in sinusoidal microfluidic channels.

Dean flow existing in sinusoidal channels could enhance the throughput and efficiency for elasto-inertial particle focusing. However, the fundamental mechanisms of elasto-inertial focusing in sinusoidal channels are still unclear. This work employs four microfluidic devices with symmetric and asymmetric sinusoidal channels to explore the elasto-inertial focusing mechanisms over a wide range of flow rates.

The impact of tubeless anesthesia versus intubated anesthesia on cerebral oxygen saturation and postoperative cognitive function in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: a randomized trial.

Background: In video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), intubated anesthesia may affect cerebral oxygen balance and postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD). To avoid complications associated with intubated anesthesia, tubeless strategies have been proposed in recent years, but its effect on cerebral oxygen balance and POCD is still unclear. This prospective study compared the cerebral oxygen saturation and the incidence of POCD in patients undergoing VATS anesthetized with tubeless anesthesia intubated anesthesia.
