Neurodegeneration is a seminal feature of many neurological disorders. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is caused by repetitive head impacts (RHI) and is characterized by sulcal tau pathology. However, quantitative assessments of regional neurodegeneration in CTE have not been described.

Article Synopsis
  • Central lymphatic disorders in the lung have been underexplored, with a focus on the historical context and basic anatomy of lung lymphatics.
  • The article discusses various pulmonary diseases linked to lymphatic dysfunction, such as Gorham-Stout disease and lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), highlighting both primary and secondary disturbances.
  • Future research may involve targeting lymphatic vessels for treatment, as presented in symposiums at international lymphology congresses in Italy and Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The paper discusses the challenges in proving program effectiveness for school and community initiatives, specifically focusing on a bullying prevention program called radKIDS®.
  • The study surveyed 330 instructors, with 148 completed responses, to assess children's learning outcomes, instructor training effectiveness, and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies.
  • Findings confirmed the program's theoretical model and highlighted differences in its safety domains compared to other bullying prevention methods, recommending improvements such as more flexible training and increased practice opportunities.

Objectives: There is a large treatment gap for mental health conditions in sub-Saharan Africa where most patients who receive any care do so from lay primary health care workers (PHCW). We sought to examine the experiences of PHCW who provide care for older people with depression in Nigerian primary health care (PHC) settings.

Methods: Qualitative study design.

Objectives: How dementia affects lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer people or those with other minoritised sexual/gender identities (LGBTQ+) is not well understood. Furthermore, existing research often excludes the voices of LGBTQ+ people living with dementia and focuses instead on their care partners. This study addresses this evidence gap by drawing on the ESRC/NIHR funded DETERMIND cohort, consisting of 940 newly diagnosed people with dementia, to explore the peri-diagnostic experiences of people living with dementia who identify as LGBTQ+.

Unlabelled: Recent findings indicate a correlation between the peripheral adaptive immune system and neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease (AD). To characterize the composition of adaptive immune cells in the peripheral blood of AD patients, we utilized single-cell mass cytometry (CyTOF) to profile peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). Concurrently, we assessed the concentration of proteins associated with AD and neuroinflammation in the plasma of the same subjects.

Consolidated bioprocessing candidate, is a cellulose hydrolysis specialist, with the ability to ferment the released sugars to produce bioethanol. is generally studied with model substrates Avicel and cellobiose to understand the metabolic pathway leading to ethanol. In the present study, adaptive laboratory evolution, allowing DSM 1237 to adapt to growth on glucose, fructose, and sorbitol, with the prospect that some strains will adapt their metabolism to yield more ethanol.

Background: People living with HIV experience higher rates of cognitive impairment (CI), and at younger ages, than the general population. These individuals report poor health-related quality of life (HRQL), however, interventions aimed at assisting people living with HIV to live well with CI do not currently exist and represent an important un-met need in this population.

Objective: This study aimed to identify the lived experience research priorities for improving HRQL and identify interventions to support priority areas.

Article Synopsis
  • The study addresses the limitations in Alzheimer's disease research due to the absence of effective animal models that reflect key disease features such as amyloid deposition, tau aggregation, inflammation, and neurodegeneration.
  • Researchers created a dual transgenic mouse model (APPNL-G-F/PS19 MAPTP301S) that exhibited significant pathologies including amyloid plaques, tau pathology, and inflammation at just 6 months of age.
  • The findings indicate that amyloid presence worsens tau pathology and inflammation, with specific brain regions showing stronger microglial inflammation and an increase in N-methyladenosine (mA), a modification linked to Alzheimer's, suggesting potential implications for understanding AD's mechanisms.

Background: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) may provide clinicians and researchers with direct insights into disease impact and patient well-being. We assessed whether selected PROMs and their domains are associated with baseline and longitudinal changes in lung function and can predict mortality in patients with fibrotic interstitial lung disease (f-ILD).

Methods: A single-centre prospective study of adult patients with f-ILD enrolled over 3 years was conducted assessing baseline and short-term changes in PROMs.

Introduction: The goal of this study is to explore the pharmacological potential of the amyloid-reducing vasodilator fasudil, a selective Ras homolog (Rho)-associated kinases (ROCK) inhibitor, in the P301S tau transgenic mouse model (Line PS19) of neurodegenerative tauopathy and Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Methods: We used LC-MS/MS, ELISA and bioinformatic approaches to investigate the effect of treatment with fasudil on the brain proteomic profile in PS19 tau transgenic mice. We also explored the efficacy of fasudil in reducing tau phosphorylation, and the potential beneficial and/or toxic effects of its administration in mice.

Data Sources: The search strategy involved three sequential stages. Initially, MEDLINE/PubMed was explored for relevant articles, identifying pertinent terms for formal searching. Using the terms ethnic, race, minoritised and dental caries, a strategy was formed and nine databases searched.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most predominant form of dementia. Rho-associated coiled coil kinase (ROCK) inhibitor, fasudil, is one of the candidate drugs against the AD progression.

Objective: We aimed to investigate possible changes of AD associated markers in three-dimensional neuro-spheroids (3D neuro-spheroids) generated from induced pluripotent stem cells derived from AD patients or healthy control subjects (HC) and to determine the impact of pharmacological intervention with the ROCK inhibitor fasudil.

Background: People with intellectual disabilities are a marginalized group whose health experiences and outcomes are poor. Lack of skill and knowledge in the healthcare workforce is a contributing factor. In England, there is a new legislative requirement for mandatory intellectual disability training to be given to the existing healthcare workforce, including doctors.

Objectives: There is a huge treatment gap for late-life depression in sub-Saharan Africa. Building on prior work to scale-up mental healthcare with the aid of the WHO Mental Health Gap Action Programme Intervention Guide electronic version (emhGAP-IG), this study aims to involve older people in the iterative development of innovations to overcome challenges in the detection and clinical management of late-life depression by frontline non-specialist primary healthcare workers (PHCW) in Nigeria.

Methods: There were 43 participants in the study.
