Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) exemplifies a disease that is difficult to predict, lacks effective treatment options, and substantially reduces the quality of life of an individual. Surgery to correct a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment fails primarily because of PVR. Likely mediators of PVR are growth factors in vitreous, which stimulate cells within and behind the retina as an inevitable consequence of a breached retina.

Article Synopsis
  • A new multi-purpose titanium forceps has been created for small-gauge pars plana vitrectomy surgeries, making it an essential tool for vitreoretinal surgeons.
  • The forceps aim to simplify the process of placing and removing 23- and 25-gauge trochars, which are used in minimally invasive eye surgeries.
  • Key features include the ability to gently manipulate the conjunctiva, measure distances accurately, and securely handle the trochar for both attachment and removal.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated the injury patterns and visual outcomes of perforating eye injuries in soldiers treated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center from 2003 to 2006.
  • Among the 65 eyes analyzed, many patients lacked protective eyewear at the time of injury, with most presenting with severely diminished vision.
  • The results showed significant visual deficits, with some patients undergoing enucleation and others experiencing complications like proliferative vitreoretinopathy, although a few achieved better than 20/200 vision by the end of follow-up.
