The implementation of the sterile insect technique against Aedes albopictus relies on many parameters, in particular on the success of the sterilization of males to be released into the target area in overflooding numbers to mate with wild females. Achieving consistent sterility levels requires efficient and standardized irradiation protocols. Here, we assessed the effects of exposure environment, density of pupae, irradiation dose, quantity of water and location in the canister on the induced sterility of male pupae.

The cause is often assumed to reflect a differential response to treatment, neglecting other potential explanations, such as the continuation of differences in pretreatment outcomes. This post hoc analysis examines whether worse post-treatment outcomes for depressed patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) are driven by reduced treatment efficacy.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjectives: The buprenorphine transdermal delivery system (BTDS) is indicated for reduction of pain in moderate to severe chronic low back pain (CLBP), which can affect patients' ability to perform routine activities of daily living (ADLs). This post hoc analysis of clinical trial data examines the impact of BTDS treatment on CLBP patients' ability to perform ADLs that relate to functioning with low back pain.
Methods: Data are drawn from a multicenter, enriched enrollment, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind 12-week trial of BTDS for pain control among opioid-naive patients with moderate to severe CLBP.

Objectives: To evaluate the impact of 12 weeks of treatment with Butrans® (buprenorphine) transdermal system (BTDS) on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) for patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP), and the maintenance of effects over 52 weeks.
Research Design And Methods: A multicenter, enriched, double-blind (DB), randomized trial comparing BTDS 20 μg/h (BTDS 20) against 5 μg/h (BTDS 5) for treatment of opioid-experienced patients with moderate-to-severe CLBP, including a 52-week open-label (OL) extension phase.
Main Outcome Measures: QoL was measured with the SF-36v2 survey before and after an OL run-in period with BTDS 20, three times during the DB phase, and seven times over the extension phase.
Unlabelled: This study evaluated the impact of treatment with Buprenorphine Transdermal System (BTDS) on the health-related quality of life for patients with moderate-to-severe chronic low back pain (CLBP), and the correspondence between quality of life and pain. A multicenter, enriched, double-blind (DB), placebo-controlled, randomized trial evaluated BTDS 10 and 20 μg/hour for treatment of opioid-naïve patients with moderate-to-severe CLBP. The SF-36v2 survey, which measures 8 domains of quality of life, was administered at screening and following an open-label run-in period with BTDS and at weeks 4, 8, and 12 of the DB phase.

This article illustrates the application of the multicontext approach by presenting a case study of an adult who is 5 years post-traumatic brain injury with executive dysfunction and limited awareness. A single case study design with repeated pre-post measures was used.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground/aim: Persons with brain injury frequently demonstrate decreased ability to monitor and apply strategies learned in treatment to everyday situations. The aim of this study is to refine, explore and provide preliminary testing of the multicontext approach in promoting strategy use across situations and increasing self-regulation, awareness and functional performance.
Methods: This study used a single-subject design with repeated measures pre- and post-intervention, with data analysed descriptively and graphically.
Schizophrenia is a strongly heritable disorder, and identification of potential candidate genes has accelerated in recent years. Genomewide scans have identified multiple large linkage regions across the genome, with fine-mapping studies and other investigations of biologically plausible targets demonstrating several promising candidate genes of modest effect. The recent introduction of technological platforms for whole-genome association (WGA) studies can provide an opportunity to rapidly identify novel targets, although no WGA studies have been reported in the psychiatric literature to date.

BACKGROUND: Policies and programs that emphasize employment for persons with mental illness are often promoted with the goals of improving economic self-sufficiency and reducing dependence on public welfare programs. At present, there is little empirical evidence about the actual effect of vocational interventions on economic self-sufficiency or on use of public benefits by persons with mental illness. STUDY AIMS: This study provides a preliminary look at how participating in supported employment, a form of vocational rehabilitation emphasizing ongoing support in competitive jobs, affects the amount that participants earn from work and the total amount of income they receive from all sources.

Current prevalence was 32% for full PTSD and 10% for partial PTSD. Prevalence of PTSD varied as a function of risk and protective factors, including volunteering, physical symptoms during the tests, and prohibited disclosure.

Recent studies found that subjects who took beta-carotene supplements orally had increases in their serum concentrations of alpha-carotene and lycopene that were large (> 150% increase) and significantly greater than such increases in subjects who received placebo and that similar supplementation was associated with a decrease of approximately 37% in plasma lutein concentrations. A biologic interaction between beta-carotene and other carotenoids was suggested.
