Aims: This study aimed to investigate whether pathways involving transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) channels in the urinary bladder mediate the bladder overactivity elicited by exposure to a low temperature in rats.

Methods: At postnatal week 10, female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were intraperitoneally injected with the TRPA1 channel antagonist, HC030031, at room temperature (RT) and subsequently exposed to low temperature (LT). Bladder specimens treated with HC030031 were evaluated for contractions through cumulative addition of the TRPA1 channel agonist trans-cinnamaldehyde.

The reason for the absence of superconductivity in SrIrO was estimated by photoelectron spectra and photoelectron holograms. The analysis of the La photoelectron hologram concluded that La atoms are substituted to Sr sites. Two O 1s peaks were observed and were identified as the oxygens in the IrO and SrO planes by photoelectron holography and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

A remaining challenge for the deployment of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells is the limited durability of platinum (Pt) nanoscale materials that operate at high voltages during the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction. In this work, atomic-scale insight into well-defined single-crystalline, thin-film and nanoscale surfaces exposed Pt dissolution trends that governed the design and synthesis of durable materials. A newly defined metric, intrinsic dissolution, is essential to understanding the correlation between the measured Pt loss, surface structure, size and ratio of Pt nanoparticles in a carbon (C) support.

Plant phenotypes caused by mineral deficiencies differ depending on growth conditions. We recently reported that the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana was severely inhibited on MGRL-based zinc (Zn)-deficient medium but not on Murashige-Skoog-based Zn-deficient medium. Here, we explored the underlying reason for the phenotypic differences in Arabidopsis grown on the different media.

Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) can be used as an external electron donor in denitrification reactors to treat drinking water, aquaculture water, and industrial wastewater with an imbalanced carbon/nitrogen ratio. However, for PLLA to function in these applications, its chemical hydrolyzability requires improvement. Although the adjustment of the crystallinity (X) is effective in improving the hydrolyzability of PLLA, the condition for the X of PLLA, in which a sufficient amount of lactic acid is released for denitrification, must be clarified.

Cytology is widely conducted for diagnosis of urothelial bladder cancer; however, its sensitivity is still low. Recent studies show that liquid biopsies can reflect tumor genomic profiles. We aim to investigate whether plasma or urine is more suitable for detecting tumor-derived DNA in patients with early-stage urothelial bladder cancer.

Variable-deceleration-ratio wide-acceptance-angle electrostatic lens (VD-WAAEL) is proposed as a potential technique for two-dimensional angular and energy analysis. The basic features of the lens are studied using the charge simulation method and ray tracing calculation. The lens uses an ellipsoidal mesh electrode and allows a wide acceptance angle of ±50°.

Because packing bags and disposable items of poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) waste are discharged together with other organic waste including garbage, anaerobic co-digestion of PLLA and other organic waste is required. However, because of low hydrolyzability of PLLA products, the chemical hydrolyzability must be improved for PLLA treatment during anaerobic digestion. This study aimed to assess weight-average molecular weight (M) and crystallinity (X), to determine the chemical hydrolyzability of PLLA, for PLLA treatment during anaerobic digestion.

The spin states of Co^{3+} ions in perovskite-type LaCoO_{3}, governed by the complex interplay between the electron-lattice interactions and the strong electron correlations, still remain controversial due to the lack of experimental techniques which can directly detect them. In this Letter, we revealed the tensile-strain dependence of spin states, i.e.

We studied the synthesis of nanocomposite materials consisting of noble metal clusters embedded in an oxide semiconductor matrix. The embedded nanostructures form in a simple self-organized single-step growth process. The primary interest is in developing materials for photo-electrochemical energy conversion where spatially inhomogeneous band structures can enhance photogenerated charge separation and carrier extraction from a semiconductor.

Objective: Using modified sonourethrography (mSUG) with retrograde jelly injection to precisely measure the morphological characteristics of the prostatic urethra, we assessed prostatic urethral morphology associated with clinical parameters of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Methods: BPH patients (n = 43) and control patients with localized prostate cancer (PC; n = 57) were imaged by mSUG before surgery. Using the seminal colliculus as a landmark, prostatic urethral angulation (PUA), sagittal urethral diameter, and anterior or posterior prostatic urethral length were measured.

The structure of Ir-doped LaAlO/SrTiO(001) interfaces was investigated on the atomic scale using probe-corrected transmission electron microscopy in high-angle annular dark-field scanning mode (HAADF-STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), combined with first-principles calculations. We report the evolution of the strain state experimentally measured in a 5 unit-cell thick LaAlO film as a function of the Ir concentration in the topmost SrTiO layer. It is shown that the LaAlO layers remain fully elastically strained up to 3% of Ir doping, whereas a higher doping level seems to promote strain relaxation through enhanced cationic interdiffusion.

In the rapidly growing field of spintronics, simultaneous control of electronic and magnetic properties is essential, and the perspective of building novel phases is directly linked to the control of tuning parameters, for example, thickness and doping. Looking at the relevant effects in interface-driven spintronics, the reduced symmetry at a surface and interface corresponds to a severe modification of the overlap of electron orbitals, that is, to a change of electron hybridization. Here we report a chemically and magnetically sensitive depth-dependent analysis of two paradigmatic systems, namely LaSrMnO and (Ga,Mn)As.

From the C 1s and K 2p photoelectron holograms, we directly reconstructed atomic images of the cleaved surface of a bimetal-intercalated graphite superconductor, (Ca, K)C, which differed substantially from the expected bulk crystal structure based on x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. Graphene atomic images were collected in the in-plane cross sections of the layers 3.3 Å and 5.

Here, the experimental results of the method of filtering the effect of chromatic aberration for wide acceptance angle electrostatic lens-based system are described. This method can eliminate the effect of chromatic aberration from the images of a measured spectral image sequence by determining and removing the effect of higher and lower kinetic energy electrons on each different energy image, which leads to significant improvement of image and spectral quality. The method is based on the numerical solution of a large system of linear equations and equivalent with a multivariate strongly nonlinear deconvolution method.

We study the electronic structure of bulk single crystals and epitaxial films of Fe_{3}O_{4}. Fe 2p core level spectra show clear differences between hard x-ray (HAX) and soft x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The bulk-sensitive spectra exhibit temperature (T) dependence across the Verwey transition, which is missing in the surface-sensitive spectra.
