Pyrrolo[2,3-]quinoxaline derivatives are known to possess antioxidant, anticancer, and antibacterial properties. Here we report the successful synthesis of five derivatives of 3-hydroxy-3-pyrroline-2-one through substitution. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay was employed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the compounds.

Background: Interest in reduced-dose pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) schedules is growing, but data on their ability to provide direct and indirect protection are scarce. We evaluated 1 + 1 (at 2 months and 12 months) and 0 + 1 (at 12 months) schedules of PCV10 or PCV13 in a predominately unvaccinated population.

Methods: In this parallel, single-blind, randomised controlled trial, healthy infants aged 2 months were recruited from birth records in three districts in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and assigned (4:4:4:4:9) to one of five groups: PCV10 at 12 months of age (0 + 1 PCV10), PCV13 at 12 months of age (0 + 1 PCV13), PCV10 at 2 months and 12 months of age (1 + 1 PCV10), PCV13 at 2 months and 12 months of age (1 + 1 PCV13), and unvaccinated control.

Nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) implemented to contain SARS-CoV-2 have decreased invasive pneumococcal disease. Previous studies have proposed the decline is due to reduced pneumococcal transmission or suppression of respiratory viruses, but the mechanism remains unclear. We undertook a secondary analysis of data collected from a clinical trial to evaluate the impact of NPIs on pneumococcal carriage and density, drivers of transmission and disease, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

The heterocyclic γ-lactam ring 2-pyrrolidinone has four carbon atoms and one nitrogen atom. Among the group of derivatives of 2-pyrrolidinones, 1,5-dihydro-2-pyrrol-2-ones, also known as 3-pyrroline-2-ones, play a significant structural role in a variety of bioactive natural compounds. In this study, three-component reactions were used to successfully synthesize six polysubstituted 3-hydroxy-3-pyrroline-2-one derivatives.

Substituted 4-acetyl-3-hydroxy-3-pyrroline-2-ones have been prepared via three-component reactions and the tautomerism of these 3-pyrroline-2-ones is due to the slight difference of energy, and the significantly large rate constant of transformation between two tautomers. 1,4,5-Trisubstituted pyrrolidine-2,3-dione derivatives were prepared from the above mentioned 2-pyrrolidinone derivatives and aliphatic amines, which exist in enamine form and are stabilized by an intramolecular hydrogen bond. A possible reaction mechanism between 3-pyrroline-2-one and aliphatic amine (CHNH) was proposed based on computational results and the main product is formed favorably following the PES via the lowest Δ pathway in both the gas-phase and an ethanol solvent model.

Introduction: Reduced-dose schedules offer a more efficient and affordable way to use pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs). Such schedules rely primarily on the maintenance of herd protection. The Vietnam Pneumococcal Trial II (VPT-II) will evaluate reduced-dose schedules of PCV10 and PCV13 utilising an unvaccinated control group.

Background: Preterm infants are highly vulnerable to infectious disease. While many factors are likely to contribute to this enhanced susceptibility, the immature nature of the preterm immune system is postulated as one key factor.

Methods: In our study, we used high-dimensional flow cytometry and cytokine assays to characterise the immune profiles in 25 preterm (range: 30.

Background: This study investigated the immunogenicity and impact on nasopharyngeal carriage of a single dose of PCV10 given to 18-month-old Vietnamese children. This information is important for countries considering catch-up vaccination during PCV introduction and in the context of vaccination during humanitarian crises.

Methods: Two groups of PCV-naïve children within the Vietnam Pneumococcal Project received PCV10 (n=197) or no PCV (unvaccinated; n=199) at 18 months of age.

Background: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) generate herd protection by reducing nasopharyngeal (NP) carriage. Two PCVs, PCV10 and PCV13, have been in use for over a decade, yet there are few data comparing their impact on carriage. Here we report their effect on carriage in a 2+1 schedule, compared with each other and with unvaccinated controls.

This brief communication describes the findings from a randomised controlled trial in Vietnam that co-administration of measles vaccine (MV) with 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10, Synflorix®, GSK) does not affect the immunogenicity of MV. These findings are most relevant for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Asia considering PCV introduction.

The degree of surveillance data and control strategies for invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) varies across the Asia-Pacific region. IMD cases are often reported throughout the region, but the disease is not notifiable in some countries, including Myanmar, Bangladesh and Malaysia. Although there remains a paucity of data from many countries, specific nations have introduced additional surveillance measures.

Background: In Vietnam, Streptococcus pneumoniae is a leading cause of disease, including meningitis. Antibiotics are available without physician prescription at community pharmacies and rates of antibiotic non-susceptibility are high. Appropriate treatment and antibiotic stewardship need to be informed by surveillance data.

Background: Few data are available to support the choice between the two currently available pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs), ten-valent PCV (PCV10) and 13-valent PCV (PCV13). Here we report a head-to-head comparison of the immunogenicity and reactogenicity of PCV10 and PCV13.

Methods: In this parallel, open-label, randomised controlled trial, healthy infants from two districts in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, were randomly allocated (in a 3:3:5:4:5:4 ratio), with use of a computer-generated list, to one of six infant PCV schedules: PCV10 in a 3 + 1 (group A), 3 + 0 (group B), 2 + 1 (group C), or two-dose schedule (group D); PCV13 in a 2 + 1 schedule (group E); or no infant PCV (control; group F).

We present a novel lossless compression algorithm called Context Copy Combinatorial Code (C4), which integrates the advantages of two very disparate compression techniques: context-based modeling and Lempel-Ziv (LZ) style copying. While the algorithm can be applied to many lossless compression applications, such as document image compression, our primary target application has been lossless compression of integrated circuit layout image data. These images contain a heterogeneous mix of data: dense repetitive data better suited to LZ-style coding, and less dense structured data, better suited to context-based encoding.
