When haemoglobin genotyping was implemented in the early 1960s to investigate population genetic structure in Atlantic cod (), it became one of the first molecular genetic markers deployed in fisheries research worldwide. However, its suitability was questioned due to its potential for selection. While the issue of neutrality concerned the first population geneticists, markers under selection are now routinely used to study population genetic structure.

The genus in the North Atlantic comprises of long lived deep-waters species that have been extensively fished upon, and many stocks are severely depleted across the Atlantic. This is particularly evident for the species . In recent papers, cryptic species have been indicated within this genus and molecular markers are therefore needed to provide identification for the species, including the cryptic species as a basis for advice regarding management and rebuilding of the stocks.

Catheter-based intervention procedures contain complex maneuvers, and they are often performed using fluoroscopic guidance assisted by 2D and 3D echocardiography viewed on a flat screen that inherently limits depth perception. Emerging mixed reality (MR) technologies, combined with advanced rendering techniques, offer potential enhancement in depth perception and navigational support. The study aims to evaluate a MR-based guidance system for the atrial septal puncture (ASP) procedure utilizing a phantom anatomical model.

Sustainable management of transboundary fish stocks hinges on accurate delineation of population structure. Genetic analysis offers a powerful tool to identify potential subpopulations within a seemingly homogenous stock, facilitating the development of effective, coordinated management strategies across international borders. Along the West African coast, the Atlantic chub mackerel () is a commercially important and ecologically significant species, yet little is known about its genetic population structure and connectivity.

  • Patients with mitral regurgitation (MR) and significant mitral annular calcification (MAC) face limited treatment options, making transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) an interesting area of study.
  • The research involved 279 patients, revealing that those with MAC had higher rates of post-procedural bleeding and renal failure but similar overall survival rates and functional improvement compared to those without MAC.
  • The findings suggest that while TMVR can be performed in MAC patients, it comes with increased complications, highlighting the need for more research on tailored TMVR devices for this group.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the escape of domesticated Atlantic cod from a fish farm in northern Norway and its implications for evolutionary and conservation biology.
  • Genetic analysis confirmed that a significant portion of the sampled cod eggs had farmed ancestry, indicating that these domesticated fish are mixing with the wild population.
  • Findings highlight concerns about reduced genetic variation among farmed cod and the potential impacts of domesticated fish on local wild populations, as well as suggesting that within-cage spawning is a major source of escaped eggs.

Objectives: Relevant paravalvular leakage (PVL) due to prosthesis dislodgement is a rare but potentially severe complication after transcatheter mitral valve implantation (TMVI). Due to the epicardial anchoring mechanism of the Tendyne® TMVI system, repositioning of the valve stent may be possible by retensioning of the tether. This multicentre study aimed to investigate the procedural and short-term safety as well as efficacy of retensioning manoeuvres.

Background: Left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) provide circulatory blood pump support for severe heart failure patients. Pump inflow obstructions may lead to stroke and pump malfunction. We aimed to verify in vivo that gradual inflow obstructions, representing prepump thrombosis, are detectable by a pump-attached accelerometer, where the routine use of pump power (P) is deficient.

Lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) is a transatlantic marine fish displaying large population sizes and a high potential for dispersal and gene-flow. These features are expected to result in weak population structure. Here, we investigated population genetic structure of lumpfish throughout its natural distribution in the North Atlantic using two approaches: I) 4,393 genome wide SNPs and 95 individuals from 10 locations, and II) 139 discriminatory SNPs and 1,669 individuals from 40 locations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared outcomes of transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) and mitral valve transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER) in treating secondary mitral regurgitation (SMR).
  • A total of 262 patients underwent TMVR, while 1,065 received M-TEER, with matched cohorts analyzed for outcomes over one year.
  • Results showed TMVR led to better reduction in mitral regurgitation and improved symptoms compared to M-TEER, but showed a tendency for higher early mortality without significant differences in mortality beyond 30 days.

Over the past decade, transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) technologies have evolved with the objective of improving outcomes for patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR) deemed unsuitable for conventional mitral valve surgery. Although the safety and efficacy of transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (TEER) is well-established, there is a sense amongst innovators that a major advantage of TMVR may be to offer a more complete solution for the correction of MR in patients whose complex anatomy means that the likelihood of achieving grade 0 or 1 MR with TEER is low. However, abrupt correction of MR in a poorly prepared left ventricle poses a number of unique haemodynamic challenges, particularly when sudden elimination of regurgitant flow causes a relative increase in left ventricular (LV) afterload.
