- Rational use of veterinary drugs can improve treatment effectiveness, minimize side effects, reduce drug residues, and help prevent drug resistance in microorganisms.
- A retrospective study in central Ethiopia analyzed 1,819 veterinary patient encounters and found that, on average, 1.23 drugs were prescribed per visit, with a significant portion involving antimicrobials (54.4%) and anthelmintics (38.9%).
- While drug prescriptions were largely appropriate, with 90.1% prescribed by generic name, there were issues, including 43% of prescriptions being written incorrectly and a reliance on empirical treatment without proper diagnostics in 96.6% of cases.
