Background & Aims: Cholestasis comprises a spectrum of liver diseases characterized by the accumulation of bile acids. Bile acids and activation of the farnesoid X receptor (FXR) can inhibit autophagy, a cellular self-digestion process necessary for cellular homeostasis and regeneration. In mice, autophagy appears to be impaired in cholestasis and induction of autophagy may reduce liver injury.

Background: Following transplantation of human neuroblastoma (NB) cells into athymic mice, we investigated the effects of tumor growth and cyclophosphamide (CTX) treatment on systemic metabolism, gut inflammation and permeability, fecal microbiome and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Methods: NB cells (MHH-NB11) were implanted into athymic mice (n=20); 20 healthy mice served as controls (sham).  CTX was given to 20 animals (10 NB and 10 sham) after 8 and 9 weeks.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare disease characterized by increased pulmonary pressure and vascular remodelling as a consequence of smooth muscle cell proliferation, endothelial cell dysfunction and inflammatory infiltrates. Meprin α is a metalloproteinase whose substrates include adhesion and cell-cell contact molecules involved in the process of immune cell extravasation. In this study, we aimed to unravel the role of meprin α in PAH-induced vascular remodelling.

The placental barrier is crucial for the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the developing fetus and is maintained by differentiation and fusion of mononucleated cytotrophoblasts into the syncytiotrophoblast, a process only partially understood. Here transcriptome and pathway analyses during differentiation and fusion of cultured trophoblasts yielded p53 signaling as negative upstream regulator and indicated an upregulation of autophagy-related genes. We further showed p53 mRNA and protein levels decreased during trophoblast differentiation.

The uncultivated "Candidatus Altiarchaeum hamiconexum" (formerly known as SM1 Euryarchaeon) carries highly specialized nano-grappling hooks ("hami") on its cell surface. Until now little is known about the major protein forming these structured fibrous cell surface appendages, the genes involved or membrane anchoring of these filaments. These aspects were analyzed in depth in this study using environmental transcriptomics combined with imaging methods.
