After surgical procedures such as coronary/peripheral bypass grafting or endarterectomy for the treatment of organ ischemia derived from atherosclerosis, intimal hyperplasia (IH) which leads to restenosis or occlusion at the site of graft anastomosis frequently occurs. In order to inhibit IH caused by abnormal growth of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in tunica media, various perivascular drug delivery devices are reported for delivery of anti-proliferation drugs into vascular tissue. However, there still remain conflicting requirements such as local and unidirectional delivery vs device porosity, and conformal tight device installation vs pulsatile expansion and constriction of blood vessels.

Article Synopsis
  • Endovascular treatment (EVT) enhances recanalization rates and functional outcomes for patients with acute ischemic stroke, but some don't show immediate recovery despite successful procedures.
  • This study focused on patients with anterior circulation stroke who received EVT, assessing factors contributing to early dramatic recovery (EDR) after treatment, with specific criteria for participant inclusion based on NIHSS scores and imaging results.
  • The analysis found that a higher initial NIHSS score and a quicker onset-to-recanalization time were significant predictors of EDR, suggesting that these factors are important for evaluating recovery potential post-EVT.

Spatiotemporal interrogation of signal transduction at the single-cell level is necessary to answer a host of important biological questions. This protocol describes a nanotechnology-based single-cell and single-molecule perturbation tool, termed mechanogenetics, that enables precise spatial and mechanical control over genetically encoded cell-surface receptors in live cells. The key components of this tool are a magnetoplasmonic nanoparticle (MPN) actuator that delivers defined spatial and mechanical cues to receptors through target-specific one-to-one engagement and a micromagnetic tweezers (μMT) that remotely controls the magnitude of force exerted on a single MPN.

Background: The beneficial effects of endovascular therapy (EVT) in acute ischemic stroke have been demonstrated in recent clinical trials using new-generation thrombectomy devices. However, the comparative effectiveness and safety of preceding intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) in this population has rarely been evaluated.

Methods: From a prospective multicenter stroke registry database in Korea, we identified patients with acute ischemic stroke who were treated with EVT within 8 h of onset and admitted to 14 participating centers during 2008-2013.

Restenosis at a vascular anastomosis site is a major cause of graft failure and is difficult to prevent by conventional treatment. Perivascular drug delivery has advantages as drugs can be diffused to tunica media and subintima while minimizing the direct effect on endothelium. This in vivo study investigated the comparative effectiveness of paclitaxel, sirolimus, and sunitinib using a perivascular biodegradable microneedle cuff.

Cell fate determination is tightly controlled by the expression of transcription factors and gene regulatory networks. PAX6 is a transcription factor containing a DNA-binding paired-box domain and homeobox domain that plays a key role in the development of the eye, brain, and pancreas. Here, we showed that histone deacetyltransferase 1 (HDAC1) is a novel binding partner of PAX6 in newborn mouse retinas.

This research investigated how the strength of vegetation-soil-topography couplings varied along a gradient of biogeomorphic succession in two distinct fluvial systems: a forested river floodplain and a coastal salt marsh creek. The strength of couplings was quantified as tri-variance, which was calculated by correlating three singular axes, one each extracted using three-block partial least squares from vegetation, soil, and topography data blocks. Within each system, tri-variance was examined at low-, mid-, and high-elevation sites, which represented early-, intermediate-, and late-successional phases, respectively, and corresponded to differences in ongoing disturbance frequency and intensity.
