Purpose: This study investigated students' perceptions of non-face-to-face theory classes and face-to-face laboratory classes conducted in anatomy courses at medical schools during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Methods: This study utilized a questionnaire to assess self-reported academic achievement level, satisfaction with non-face-to-face theory classes, satisfaction with face-to-face laboratory classes, and self-directed learning level, and conducted difference verification and regression analysis for 51 students who took anatomy courses from the fall semester of 2020 to the spring semester of 2021.

Results: The group with a high self-reported academic achievement level was more satisfied with the non-face-to-face theory classes than the group with a low self-reported academic achievement level.

Magnetic nanoparticles have an important role as heat generators in magnetic fluid hyperthermia, a type of next-generation cancer treatment. Despite various trials to improve the heat generation capability of magnetic nanoparticles, iron oxide nanoparticles are the only approved heat generators for clinical applications, which require a large injection dose due to their low hyperthermia efficiency. In this study, iron oxide nanoclusters (NCs) with a highly enhanced hyperthermia effect and adjustable size were synthesized through a facile and simple solvothermal method.

A 78-year-old male cadaver showed bilateral anomalous muscles on the dorsum of the hand. An extensor digitorum brevis manus was noted on the dorsum of the right hand. It originated from the distal end of the radius and the radiocarpal joint ligaments and inserted into the metacarpophalangeal joint of the third digit.

Activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) and c-Jun play key roles in either cell death or cell survival, depending on the cellular background. To evaluate the functional significance of ATF3/c-Jun in the peripheral nervous system, we examined neuronal cell death, activation of ATF3/c-Jun, and microglial responses in facial motor nuclei up to 24 weeks after an extracranial facial nerve axotomy in adult rats. Following the axotomy, neuronal survival rate was progressively but significantly reduced to 79.

Accumulating evidence has shown that both phosphorylated c-Jun (pc-Jun) and activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) were upregulated in a variety of tissue injuries and proposed to play an important role in cell death/survival. To elucidate the significance and functional role of these immediate-early genes during neuronal damage in the central nervous system, we examined temporal and spatial profiles of pc-Jun and ATF3 in dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra (SN) following transection of the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) in adult rats. Morphological characteristics of pc-Jun-positive dopaminergic neurons as well as microglial reaction in response to the axotomy-induced neurodegeneration were also investigated.

Several pharmacological and physiological studies have suggested that GABA(A) receptors (GABA(A) Rs) may exist in the rat major pelvic ganglion (MPG), a large coalescent pelvic ganglion that contains both sympathetic and parasympathetic components which innervates pelvic organs. However, the presence of GABA(A) R in the MPG has never been demonstrated directly by morphological studies. In the present study, we used immunohistochemistry to demonstrate the existence of GABA(A) R beta2/3 subunits for the first time in the rat MPG.

To elucidate the role and pathological dynamics of activated microglia, this study assessed the phagocytic, immunophenotypic, morphological, and migratory properties of activated microglia in the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) axotomized rat brain. Activated microglia were identified using two different monoclonal antibodies: ED1 for phagocytic activity and OX6 for major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II. Phagocytic microglia, characterized by ED1-immunoreactivity or ED1- and OX6-immunoreactivity, appeared in the MFB and substantia nigra (SN) as early as 1-3 days post-lesion (dpl), when there was no apparent loss of SN dopamine (DA) neurons.
