Background/aims: This study aimed to investigate whether the apolipoprotein (Apo) B/ApoA-I ratio is associated with carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) subjects with low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels less than 100 mg/dL.
Methods: This cross-sectional study included 845 subjects aged with T2DM 40 to 75 years who had visited Huh's Diabetes Center in Seoul, Republic of Korea for CIMT measurement. Traditional fasting lipid profiles, ApoB and ApoA-I levels were examined.
Aims/introduction: We investigated the failure of monotherapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in real practice settings.
Materials And Methods: The Korean National Diabetes Program was a prospective, multicenter observational cohort study of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in Korea. Of the 3,950 patients enrolled in the study, we studied 998 who were continuously maintained on monotherapy for at least 90 days at six participating centers.

We investigated the potential association of renal expression of tubular injury markers, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), and inflammatory markers, tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) 1 and 2 with renal progression in pathologically proven diabetic nephropathy (DN).
Methods: We identified 122 patients with confirmed DN.
Objective: The antimicrobial efficacy of zinc- (ZnCl) and cetylpyridinium-chloride (CPC) and their inhibition capacity on volatile sulfur compound (VSC) production by oral bacterial strains were investigated.
Design: Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and growth curves were determined for ZnCl, CPC, and CPC with ZnCl solutions against eight oral microorganisms (Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans) known to be involved in the pathophysiology of both halitosis and periodontal disease. Gas chromatography was applied to measure VSCs (HS, CHSH, (CH)S) production levels of each strains following exposure to the solutions.
Here we examine the question of how endothelial cells (ECs) develop their apical membrane surface domain during lumen and tube formation. We demonstrate marked apical membrane targeting of activated Src kinases to this apical domain during early and late stages of this process. Immunostaining for phosphotyrosine or phospho-Src reveals apical membrane staining in intracellular vacuoles initially.

Methods: This study included 1,732 subjects (1,482 male and 250 female) in whom OSA was diagnosed by polysomnography. The severity of OSA was defined as mild, moderate, or severe with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) score of 5 to < 15, 15 to < 30, and ≥ 30 events/h, respectively.

Methods: The medical records of 129 patients who underwent esophagectomy and lymph node dissection for pathologically confirmed pT1 ESCC between July 2006 and December 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Limited ML, such as traditional 2-field or transhiatal esophagectomy, was performed in 42 patients (group 1), and total ML, including the bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve nodes, was performed in 87 patients (group 2).

In this study, we compared the changes in oxidative stress markers after valsartan and amlodipine treatment in type 2 diabetic patients with hypertension and compared the changes in metabolic parameters.
Methods: Type 2 diabetic subjects with hypertension 30 to 80 years of age who were not taking antihypertensive drugs were randomized into either valsartan (n = 33) or amlodipine (n = 35) groups and treated for 24 weeks.
A 71-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for dyspnea, which had worsened over a period of more than six months. He was previously diagnosed as having cryptogenic organizing pneumonia, and was treated with steroids in another hospital. He had complained of worsening dyspnea, despite the treatment.
