ApoB/ApoA-I ratio is independently associated with carotid atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes mellitus with well-controlled LDL cholesterol levels.

Background/aims: This study aimed to investigate whether the apolipoprotein (Apo) B/ApoA-I ratio is associated with carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) subjects with low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels less than 100 mg/dL.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 845 subjects aged with T2DM 40 to 75 years who had visited Huh's Diabetes Center in Seoul, Republic of Korea for CIMT measurement. Traditional fasting lipid profiles, ApoB and ApoA-I levels were examined.

Failure of monotherapy in clinical practice in patients with type 2 diabetes: The Korean National Diabetes Program.

Aims/introduction: We investigated the failure of monotherapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in real practice settings.

Materials And Methods: The Korean National Diabetes Program was a prospective, multicenter observational cohort study of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in Korea. Of the 3,950 patients enrolled in the study, we studied 998 who were continuously maintained on monotherapy for at least 90 days at six participating centers.

Hyperuricaemia and development of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Asian population.

Recently, meta-analysis studies reported that hyperuricaemia is associated with higher incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), however, there are limited data on the Asian population. The aim of this observational study is to estimate the long-term impact of hyperuricaemia on the new-onset T2DM and cardiovascular events. This study is based on a single-centre, all-comers, and large retrospective cohort.

T-cell protein tyrosine phosphatase (TC-PTP) contains bipartite nuclear localization signals (NLSI and NLSII) in its C-terminus. We previously have demonstrated that the nuclear form of TC-PTP (TC45) is mainly localized to the cytoplasm in keratinocytes and it is translocated to the nucleus following UVB irradiation.

Tissue expression of tubular injury markers is associated with renal function decline in diabetic nephropathy.

Aims: The pathogenesis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is complex and multifactorial; increasing evidence suggests that tubular injury and inflammatory process are involved in disease progression. We investigated the potential association of renal expression of tubular injury markers, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), and inflammatory markers, tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) 1 and 2 with renal progression in pathologically proven diabetic nephropathy (DN).

Methods: We identified 122 patients with confirmed DN.

Objective: The antimicrobial efficacy of zinc- (ZnCl) and cetylpyridinium-chloride (CPC) and their inhibition capacity on volatile sulfur compound (VSC) production by oral bacterial strains were investigated.

Design: Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and growth curves were determined for ZnCl, CPC, and CPC with ZnCl solutions against eight oral microorganisms (Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans) known to be involved in the pathophysiology of both halitosis and periodontal disease. Gas chromatography was applied to measure VSCs (HS, CHSH, (CH)S) production levels of each strains following exposure to the solutions.

Src- and Fyn-dependent apical membrane trafficking events control endothelial lumen formation during vascular tube morphogenesis.

Here we examine the question of how endothelial cells (ECs) develop their apical membrane surface domain during lumen and tube formation. We demonstrate marked apical membrane targeting of activated Src kinases to this apical domain during early and late stages of this process. Immunostaining for phosphotyrosine or phospho-Src reveals apical membrane staining in intracellular vacuoles initially.

Independent Contributions of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and the Metabolic Syndrome to the Risk of Chronic Kidney Disease.

Study Objectives: This retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the associations and interactions among obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and metabolic syndrome (MS).

Methods: This study included 1,732 subjects (1,482 male and 250 female) in whom OSA was diagnosed by polysomnography. The severity of OSA was defined as mild, moderate, or severe with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) score of 5 to < 15, 15 to < 30, and ≥ 30 events/h, respectively.

Feasibility of four-arm robotic lobectomy as solo surgery in patients with clinical stage I lung cancer.

Background: This study was performed to investigate the feasibility of four-arm robotic lobectomy (FARL) as a solo surgical technique in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Early outcome and long-term survival of FARL were compared with those of video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomy (VATL).

To explore the effects of gratitude and resentment on mental well-being, we acquired functional magnetic resonance imaging and heart rate (HR) data before, during, and after the gratitude and resentment interventions. Functional connectivity (FC) analysis was conducted to identify the modulatory effects of gratitude on the default mode, emotion, and reward-motivation networks.

Extent of Mediastinal Lymphadenectomy and Survival in Superficial Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Background: The aim of this study is to investigate the utility of total mediastinal lymphadenectomy (ML) in superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).

Methods: The medical records of 129 patients who underwent esophagectomy and lymph node dissection for pathologically confirmed pT1 ESCC between July 2006 and December 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Limited ML, such as traditional 2-field or transhiatal esophagectomy, was performed in 42 patients (group 1), and total ML, including the bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve nodes, was performed in 87 patients (group 2).

Protein Tyrosine Signaling and its Potential Therapeutic Implications in Carcinogenesis.

Protein tyrosine phosphorylation is a crucial signaling mechanism that plays a role in epithelial carcinogenesis. Protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) control various cellular processes including growth, differentiation, metabolism, and motility by activating major signaling pathways including STAT3, AKT, and MAPK. Genetic mutation of PTKs and/or prolonged activation of PTKs and their downstream pathways can lead to the development of epithelial cancer.

Diabetes self-assessment score and the development of diabetes: A 10-year prospective study.

To verify that the Korean Diabetes Score (KDS), a self-assessment, predicts the risk of diabetes in various comprehensive risk models, and to investigate factors that enhance its predictive ability in a large cohort. We analyzed 8735 adults without diabetes in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study, an ongoing large community-based 10-year cohort study. Incident diabetes was defined as fasting blood glucose ≥126 mg/dL or postload 2-hour glucose ≥200 mg/dL by 75 g oral glucose tolerance test conducted biennually, or currently taking medication for diabetes.

This study investigated water extract (CMW)-induced glucose uptake in HepG2 cells and the effect of CMW treatment on glucose metabolism.

Effects of valsartan and amlodipine on oxidative stress in type 2 diabetic patients with hypertension: a randomized, multicenter study.

Background/aims: Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of diabetic complications and antagonists of renin-angiotensin system and amlodipine have been reported previously to reduce oxidative stress. In this study, we compared the changes in oxidative stress markers after valsartan and amlodipine treatment in type 2 diabetic patients with hypertension and compared the changes in metabolic parameters.

Methods: Type 2 diabetic subjects with hypertension 30 to 80 years of age who were not taking antihypertensive drugs were randomized into either valsartan (n = 33) or amlodipine (n = 35) groups and treated for 24 weeks.
