Spur cell anemia is acquired hemolytic anemia seen in patients with advanced liver disease, particularly in the setting of alcoholism, and warrants urgent liver transplant evaluation. We describe the case of a 58-year-old female with alcoholic cirrhosis who presented with worsening liver disease, profound anemia poorly responsive to blood transfusions, and multiple spur cells on the peripheral smear. She underwent a liver transplant, which led to the resolution of hematologic abnormalities and the need for transfusions.

A detailed description of a flexible and portable atomic layer deposition (ALD) system is presented for conducting in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) absorption spectroscopy studies during the evolution and growth of ALD films. The system is directly integrated with a commercial FTIR spectrometer (Bruker Vertex 80V) to avoid the necessity of an external optical path to the instrument, thereby mitigating complexity and optical losses. In this work, we use potassium bromide (KBr) with a 5 nm layer of sputtered Si as a substrate due to higher infrared transmittance when compared to a single-side polished Si wafer.

Hepatopulmonary syndrome is a phenomenon that results in an intrapulmonary shunt leading to dyspnea and hypoxemia with poor response to oxygen supplementation. It is now an indication for liver transplantation; however, some transplants result in subsequent pulmonary hypertension. Postulated mechanisms include unmasking of underlying pulmonary hypertension with liver transplant and increased pulmonary vascular resistance due to increased blood flow in hepatopulmonary syndrome.

Objectives: Low molecular weight heparin and vitamin K antagonists are commonly used in cirrhotic patients requiring anticoagulation. However, their monitoring with anti-factor Xa and international normalized ratio (INR) may not be reliable in cirrhosis. Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) do not need laboratory monitoring, making these agents a favorable alternative.

Background And Aims: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an antigen-mediated inflammatory esophageal disease that is commonly treated with high-dose proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), topical corticosteroids, or food elimination diet (FED) monotherapy. Combination treatment has not been well studied in the management of EoE. We aimed to determine if PPI and FED combination therapy was able to induce histologic remission in patients with EoE refractory to monotherapy.

Hemosuccus pancreaticus is a life-threatening but rare cause of intermittent upper gastrointestinal bleeding caused by acute/subacute hemorrhage into a pancreatic duct or pancreatic pseudocyst because of a ruptured pseudoaneurysm. This entity is described in patients with pseudoaneurysms that develop in the context of severe pancreatic/peripancreatic inflammatory changes. Hemosuccus pancreaticus presents a difficult diagnostic and therapeutic conundrum because it tends to involve inflamed, friable, and tortuous vascular pathways.

Utilizing quantum effects in complex oxides, such as magnetism, multiferroicity and superconductivity, requires atomic-level control of the material's structure and composition. In contrast, the continuous conductivity changes that enable artificial oxide-based synapses and multiconfigurational devices are driven by redox reactions and domain reconfigurations, which entail long-range ionic migration and changes in stoichiometry or structure. Although both concepts hold great technological potential, combined applications seem difficult due to the mutually exclusive requirements.

Article Synopsis
  • Magnesium and its alloys are studied for temporary implant devices, but issues like stress corrosion cracking (SCC) hinder their everyday use.
  • This research examines the SCC susceptibility of ALD-coated AZ31 alloys in simulated body fluid, finding that titania and zirconia coatings significantly reduce SCC susceptibility by up to 76%.
  • The study highlights that the coatings' ability to reduce corrosion is key to lowering SCC risks, suggesting that this treatment could improve the viability of magnesium-based implants in biomedical applications.
