Background: Minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer (CRC) offer superior outcomes compared to open surgery. This study aimed to review the robotic and laparoscopic procedures for CRC performed in Africa, and compare the mean surgery duration, blood loss, hospital stay, rate of conversion, and prevalence of morbidity and mortality. This is the first study to compare the outcomes of robotic and laparoscopic surgeries for CRC in Africa.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of probiotic bacteria (Pediococcus acidilactici BX-B122 and Bacillus coagulans BX-B118) on methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide, and fermentation profile of dietary Delonix regia seeds in ruminant. Ruminal contents from slaughtered rams and steers were used as inoculum for in vitro fermentation system. The total gas, methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide volume, as well as pH and dry matter degradability, were quantified in three fermentation cycles.

Purpose: Surgical practice globally has undergone significant advancements with the advent of robotic systems. In Africa, a similar trend is emerging with the introduction of robots into various surgical specialties in certain countries. The need to review the robotic procedures performed, platforms utilized, and analyze outcomes such as conversion, morbidity, and mortality associated with robotic surgery in Africa, necessitated this study.

Background: Stilting is a novel technique used in reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) in patients with significant glenoid bone loss. This technique utilizes peripheral locking screws placed behind an unseated portion of the baseplate to transmit forces from the baseplate to the cortical surface of the glenoid, without the need for bone grafting. The stilted screw, once locked, provides a fixed angle point of support for this unseated aspect of a baseplate.

Background: The current neurosurgical workforce is not large enough to address the significant burden of neurosurgical disease worldwide, and women are under-represented in this surgical specialty. However, trainee opportunities are particularly scarce in lower- and middle-income countries, where the burden of neurosurgical disease is high. Thus, the primary aim of this study was to assess the effects of gender and country on perceived access to neurosurgical research and mentorship opportunities.

Context: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States relied on the public health workforce to control the spread of COVID-19 while continuing to provide foundational public health services. Facing longstanding staffing shortages, state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) public health agencies (PHAs) used various strategies and supports to surge the workforce in response to the pandemic.

Objectives: The study explored (1) the types of strategies and supports STLT PHAs used to surge the public health workforce during the pandemic, (2) assessments of surge strategies and supports, and (3) approaches to using the range of surge strategies available.

Introduction: Intracranial fungal infections' (IcFIs) varying clinical manifestations lead to difficulties in diagnosis and treatment. African populations are disproportionately affected by the high burden of the disease. There is a lack of clarity as to the diagnostic and treatment modalities employed across the continent.

Background: Strict social distancing public health measures to decrease COVID-19 spread increased social distancing stress. However, differences in social distancing stress by anxiety/depression symptoms are understudied, especially based on COVID-19 diagnosis status, gender identity, and immigration status. We examined whether the association between social distancing stress and anxiety/depression symptoms was moderated by COVID-19 diagnosis status, gender identity, and immigration status.

Background: Minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopy and robotics, has significantly improved general surgical (GS) practice globally. While robot-assisted GS practice is yet to be adopted in the majority of Africa, laparoscopy has been utilized to improve surgical outcomes. This study aims to review the laparoscopic GS procedures (LGSPs) performed and evaluate outcomes such as conversion to open surgery, morbidity, and mortality in Africa.

Background: Adult mechanical bowel obstruction (AMBO) has been previously reported to be majorly caused by hernias in developing countries. In Nigeria, however, there has been a recent change in pattern with adhesions now being the leading cause. The aim of this systematic review is to examine the changing pattern of the causes, and outcomes of patients managed for AMBO in Nigeria.

Background Diclofenac (DCF), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is widely used for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, but it can also be nephrotoxic. Vitamin E (α-tocopherol) has been shown to protect against renal toxicity caused by various agents, including NSAIDs. This study aims to evaluate the pathophysiology of renal damage and the nephroprotective effect of vitamin E against DCF-induced renal damage in male Wistar rats.

Global coastal areas are at risk due to geomorphological issues, climate change-induced sea-level rise, and increasing human population, settlements, and socioeconomic activities. Here, the study examines the vulnerability of the West African (WA) coast using six satellite-derived geophysical variables and two key socioeconomic parameters as indicators of coastal vulnerability index (CVI). These geophysical and socioeconomic variables are integrated to develop a CVI for the WA coast.

The dietary value of popcorn, an important snack, depends on its proximate and nutritional constituents, while the economic worth is based on popability and expansion traits of the kernels. There is paucity of information on how soil fertility influences or relates with popping potentials as well as quality of popcorn kernel in semi-arid region. Therefore, the proximate composition and popping parameters of popcorn in response to organic and inorganic fertilizers were investigated.
