Breast cancer (BC) is classified based on the expression of histopathological markers, namely, estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PgR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). Carcinomas with apocrine differentiation (CAD) are classified based on morphology. Androgen receptor (AR) is highly expressed in CAD; however, no study has comprehensively examined AR-related proteins in CAD.

Background: We aimed to clarify the existence and pathological features of obesity cardiomyopathy (OCM) in Japan using our series of autopsy cases.

Methods: In this retrospective autopsy study, OCM was defined as cardiac hypertrophy (≥ 400 g in men, ≥ 320 g in women) of unknown aetiology in individuals with obesity (body mass index [BMI] ≥ 25 kg/m according to the Japanese definition of obesity). We compared cases of OCM with those with obesity without cardiac hypertrophy (OB) and normal weight without cardiac hypertrophy (normal control).

Article Synopsis
  • - An 88-year-old Japanese woman with HTLV-1 was found to have generalized lymphadenopathy and diagnosed with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) exhibiting characteristics similar to angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL).
  • - Biopsy results showed atypical T-cells with specific markers indicating a T-follicular helper phenotype, along with the presence of Epstein-Barr virus RNA and HTLV-1 proviral DNA, leading to the ATLL diagnosis.
  • - The case highlights the complexity of diagnosing ATLL as it can mimic other T-cell lymphomas, emphasizing the importance of routine HTLV-1 screening in areas where the virus is common to prevent misdiagnosis.

Breast cancer (BC) is classified into four major histological subtypes, namely luminal A, luminal B, HER2, and basal-like, and its treatment is based on these subtypes. The use of immune checkpoint inhibitors against BC depends on the expression of PD-1/PD-L1. Another tumor immune system-the cGAS-STING pathway-is a potential target for cancer immunotherapy.

A 64-year-old woman with a history of subarachnoid hemorrhage, breast cancer, cervical spine tumor, and syringomyelia developed recurrent pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade after receiving the third dose of coronavirus disease 2019 mRNA vaccine, mRNA-1273 (Spikevax, Moderna). The cardiac tamponade of unknown etiology was intractable with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, colchicine, and prednisolone. She underwent thoracoscopic pericardiectomy, and microthrombi were detected in the pericardial tissue.

  • Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare cancer mainly found in the salivary glands, specifically noted here in a case involving the sublingual gland and lung metastases.
  • A 57-year-old Japanese woman had low FDG uptake in her lung metastases, despite high uptake in the primary tumor, suggesting varying tumor behavior.
  • Pathological findings indicated a stronger presence of solid components and a higher Ki-67 index in the primary tumor, leading to the hypothesis that different tumor growth rates are responsible for the discrepancies in FDG uptake.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a common histological type of lung carcinoma that is associated with interstitial pneumonia (IP). We hypothesized that identifying specific genetic alterations or molecular markers of SCC with IP may aid the development of novel therapeutic strategies for the same. Therefore, in the present study, we aimed to identify tumorigenic genetic alterations and molecular markers in cases of SCC with IP.

Background: The prevalence of transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients remains unclear. We explored the efficacy of computed tomography-based myocardial extracellular volume (CT-ECV) combined with red flags for the early screening of concealed ATTR-CM in AF patients undergoing catheter ablation.

Methods and results: Patients referred for AF ablation at Oita University Hospital were prescreened using the red-flag signs defined by echocardiographic or electrocardiographic findings, medical history, symptoms, and blood biochemical findings.

Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers and has a high mortality rate. Lymph node metastasis is a key determinant of prognosis, and an essential mechanism involved in metastasis is the epithelial-mesenchymal transition. In this study, we aimed to assess the diagnostic role of versican (VCAN), a molecule participating in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition, on the detection of metastatic cancer.

Endometrioid carcinoma (EC) and clear cell carcinoma (CC) are associated with endometrial tissue hyperplasia and endometriosis, and they occur in the endometrium and ovaries. However, detailed differences between these tumors based on immunostaining are unclear; therefore, in this study, we aimed to analyze the clinicopathological correlations between these tumors using immunostaining and to develop new treatments based on histological subtypes. Immunohistochemistry was used to investigate differentially expressed hypoxia-associated molecules (hypoxia-inducible factor-1 subunit alpha [HIF-1α], forkhead box O1, prostate-specific membrane antigen, signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 [STAT3], hepatocyte nuclear factor 1β [HNF-1β], aquaporin-3, and vimentin [VIM]) between these carcinomas because of the reported association between CC and ischemia.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research indicates that fat accumulation in the interatrial septum (IAS) may play a significant role in causing atrial fibrillation (AF), and this study explores how transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) can effectively assess IAS fat in AF patients.
  • The imaging results showed greater IAS fat volume relative to epicardial fat in patients with persistent AF compared to those with paroxysmal AF, suggesting a link between IAS adiposity and AF severity.
  • Histological analysis from autopsy samples revealed thicker IAS in AF patients and highlighted changes like "myocardial splitting" due to IAS fat infiltration, which may contribute to atrial cardiomyopathy associated with AF.
