Graph theory has been widely used to quantitatively analyze complex networks of molecules, materials, and cells. Analyzing the dynamic complex structure of extracellular matrix can predict cell-material interactions but has not yet been demonstrated. In this study, graph theory-based mathematical modeling of RGD ligand graph inter-relation is demonstrated by differentially cutting off RGD-to-RGD interlinkages with flexibly conjugated magnetic nanobars (MNBs) with tunable aspect ratio.

The native extracellular matrix is continuously remodeled to form complex interconnected network structures that reversibly regulate stem cell behaviors. Both regulation and understanding of its intricate dynamicity can help to modulate numerous cell behaviors. However, neither of these has yet been achieved due to the lack of designing and modeling such complex structures with dynamic controllability.

Modern graphics processing units (GPUs) provide an unprecedented level of computing power. In this study, we present a high-performance, multi-GPU implementation of the analytical nuclear gradient for Kohn-Sham time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), employing the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) and Gaussian-type atomic orbitals as basis functions. We discuss GPU-efficient algorithms for the derivatives of electron repulsion integrals and exchange-correlation functionals within the range-separated scheme.

Article Synopsis
  • Lactate is a common marker for sepsis but has limitations, prompting research into new biomarkers like plasma renin concentration and renin activity for better outcomes in patients with septic shock.
  • A study involving 117 patients assessed the diagnostic accuracy of these renin measures along with lactate levels to predict mortality and kidney issues.
  • Results indicated that while renin concentration and activity were similar to lactate in predicting 28-day mortality, they were more effective in forecasting acute kidney injury (AKI).

Endometrial receptivity is a complex process that prepares the uterine endometrium for embryo implantation; insufficient endometrial receptivity is one of the causes of implantation failure. Here, we analyzed the microRNA expression profiles of exosomes derived from both receptive (RL95-2) and non-receptive (AN3-CA) endometrial epithelial cell (EEC) lines to identify exosomal miRNAs closely linked to endometrial receptivity. Among the 466 differentially expressed miRNAs, miR-205-5p was the most highly expressed in exosomes secreted from receptive RL95-2 cells.

A central challenge in practically using high-capacity silicon (Si) as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries is alleviating significant volume change of Si during cycling. One key to resolving the failure issues of Si is exploiting carefully designed polymer binders exhibiting mechanical robustness to retain the structural integrity of Si electrodes, while concurrently displaying elasticity and toughness to effectively dissipate external stresses exerted by the volume changes of Si. Herein, a highly elastic and tough polymer binder is proposed by interweaving polyacrylic acid (PAA) with poly(urea-urethane) (PUU) elastomer for Si anodes.

Article Synopsis
  • Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) has potential benefits for wound healing by improving tissue microcirculation, especially in diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) patients.
  • A study involving 25 patients with type 2 diabetes and Wagner grade I to II DFUs showed that after 3 weeks of ESWT, tissue microcirculation significantly improved as measured by transcutaneous partial oxygen pressure (TcPO2).
  • Results indicated that the TcPO2 levels in the ESWT group reached a significant increase by the second week, suggesting that at least 6 sessions of ESWT over 2 weeks are necessary for noticeable improvement, and further research with larger samples is recommended.
