Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disorder characterized by elevated pulmonary artery pressure, right ventricular (RV) hypertrophy, and vascular remodeling. Transforming growth factor-β-induced protein (TGFBI) is an extracellular matrix protein regulated by TGF-β that plays a critical role in pulmonary vascular remodeling in PAH. Here, we investigated the role of TGFBI in monocrotaline-induced PAH pathogenesis and evaluated the therapeutic effects of the endothelin receptor antagonist bosentan.

Article Synopsis
  • The Korean LST Decision Act, enacted in February 2018, has transformed end-of-life decision-making for children by promoting structured discussions and decision processes.
  • A study comparing patient records before and after the law showed a significant reduction in both total hospitalization and ICU stay durations, along with quicker end-of-life documentation.
  • Post-law, there was a notable increase in the use of POLST documents and LST withdrawal decisions, while DNR orders significantly decreased, indicating a shift in how end-of-life care is approached for terminally ill children.

Background: Herein we investigate the difference between Kawasaki disease (KD) with and without a recent history of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Methods: We compared the clinical characteristics of patients with KD during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in a single children's hospital in Korea. Fifty-two patients were enrolled and divided into group 1 (with a history of COVID-19,  = 26) and group 2 (without a history of COVID-19,  = 26) according to whether or not they contracted COVID-19 within the 8 weeks before hospitalization.

Diagnosis of Kawasaki disease in infants under 3 months of age is challenging. This study aimed to confirm the diagnostic efficacy of BCGitis in patients with Kawasaki disease aged <3 months. Overall, 473 children were enrolled; they were grouped by age into group 1 (≤3 months, n = 19) and group 2 (>3 months, n = 454).

As adolescents started to be vaccinated against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), suspected myocarditis and pericarditis related to the vaccine were reported in adolescents. According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), 2,796,270 persons aged 12−18 years were fully vaccinated by December 8. Among these, 9223 adverse events were reported (0.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed serum ferritin levels as a potential early screening tool for Kawasaki disease with macrophage activation syndrome (KD-MAS) in 158 patients.
  • It found that those with KD-MAS had significantly higher serum ferritin levels (>500 ng/mL) and distinct laboratory results compared to those with Kawasaki disease alone.
  • The researchers recommend including ferritin tests in initial lab work to help quickly differentiate between Kawasaki disease with and without macrophage activation syndrome.

Background: Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) is part of the recommended treatment of Kawasaki disease (KD). Controversies remain regarding the optimal dose of ASA. We aimed to evaluate the impact of different doses of ASA on inflammation control while minimizing adverse effects in the acute phase treatment of KD.

Background: There are few studies on the effect of intensivist staffing in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) in Korea. We aimed to evaluate the effect of pediatric intensivist staffing on treatment outcomes in a Korean hospital PICU.

Methods: We analyzed two time periods according to pediatric intensivist staffing: period 1, between November 2015 to January 2017 (no intensivist staffing, n=97) and period 2, between February 2017 to February 2018 (intensivists staffing, n=135).

Background: The decision to use transannular patching (TAP) during tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) repair depends on the pulmonary valve annulus size; the z score of the pulmonary annulus is the most commonly used predictor. However, definitive results are not obtained with z scores as different z score data sets are used for different parameters.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the echocardiographic and other key factors that warranted a change in the surgical method during TOF surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare cytokine profiles in infants with wheezing caused by rhinovirus (RV) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) during acute infections.
  • 88 infants with lower respiratory tract infections were analyzed, revealing higher levels of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) and IL-10 in RV-infected infants with wheezing compared to those without.
  • In contrast, RSV-infected infants showed no significant differences in these cytokine levels, indicating potential regulatory roles of cytokines in wheezing associated with RV infections.
