Prevalence of co-occurring conditions among youths receiving treatment with primary anxiety, ADHD, or depressive disorder diagnoses.

Introduction: Anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are some of the most common conditions that youths (<18 years old) receive mental health treatment for. These conditions are associated with high-risk substance use or substance use disorders (SUDs). This study sought to identify the proportion of youths (<18 years old) with anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, or ADHD as a primary diagnosis in community mental health centers (CMHCs) having co-occurring high-risk substance use or a SUD.

Trauma and Gang Affiliation Increase Likelihood of Committing Assault among Juveniles Admitted to Secure Custody.

Objectives: To examine the prediction of involvement in serious physical assault from risk factors collected during routine screening of juveniles admitted to secure custody with a focus on trauma and gang affiliation and an exploration of gender differences in risk.

Methods: We analyzed administrative data collected on 879 juvenile offenders (93% boys; age = 17 years; 71% Black, 19% Hispanic, 9% White, 1% other race/ethnicity), including extensive data on histories of trauma exposure and other risk as well as gang affiliation.

Results: We found that participation in serious assault was linked to gender, gang affiliation, and both witnessing and experiencing various traumatic events.

[Rhinopoiesis after traumatic total amputation in childhood in an 11-year-old child].

Fortunately, traumatic total amputations of the nose are rare, especially in children. Their reconstructions generally require several operative steps, most often associating cartilaginous grafts (rib and/or concha), a free radial antebrachial flap for mucosal reconstruction and a frontal flap for the skin covering. These are therefore long and complex procedures requiring a trained surgical team and maximum patient adherence to their treatment plan.

Trauma Exposure and Mental Health Needs Among Adolescents Involved With the Juvenile Justice System.

Justice-involved adolescents typically report high levels of lifetime trauma exposure, although research on juvenile justice system-wide screenings is limited. Further, there is little evidence from research on the psychological and substance abuse treatment related needs of youth relative to the trauma levels or types of trauma experienced by justice-involved adolescents. We documented lifetime exposure to traumatic events and its relation to psychological and substance use concerns in a sample of adolescents admitted to custody in the New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission.

Mentors' experiences of mentoring justice-involved adolescents: A narrative of developing cultural consciousness through connection.

Mentoring provides a relational intervention that can promote positive youth development among adolescents who are involved in the juvenile justice system. The perspectives of mentors engaging these youth, particularly insights considered through a cultural humility lens, have been largely absent from the literature to date. This study examined predominately White, middle- to upper-class adult mentors' experiences mentoring racially diverse, working-class youth.

Auditory Brainstem Changes in Timing may Underlie Hyperacusis in a Salicylate-induced Acute Rat Model.

Hyperacusis, an exaggerated, sometimes painful perception of loudness even for soft sounds, is a poorly understood distressing condition. While the involvement of modified gain of central auditory neurons and the influence of nonauditory brain regions are well-documented, the issue of where in the auditory system these abnormalities arise remains open, particularly when hyperacusis comes without sensorineural hearing loss. Here we used acute intraperitoneal administration of sodium salicylate (150 mg/kg) in rats, enough to produce > 10-dB decrease in acoustic startle threshold with mild hearing loss at low frequencies (<10 kHz).

CHOICES-TEEN: Reducing Substance-Exposed Pregnancy and HIV among Juvenile Justice Adolescent Females.

Objective: The feasibility and acceptability of CHOICES-TEEN - a 3-session intervention to reduce overlapping risks of alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP), tobacco-exposed pregnancy (TEP) and HIV - was assessed among females in the juvenile justice system.

Methods: Females 14-17 on community probation in Houston, Texas were eligible if presenting with aforementioned health risks. Outcome measures - obtained at one- and three-months post baseline - included the Timeline Followback, Client Satisfaction Questionnaire-8, session completion/checklists, Working Alliance Inventory-Short, and open-ended questions.

[Secondary rhinoplasties].

As a very challenging surgery, primary rhinoplasty can lead to secondary. After a primary, patient's concerns can sometimes be pretty easy to fix (remaining bump), but may some other request long and very difficult surgeries (short nose). This article describes the most common reasons of secondary rhinoplasties and provides, for each of them, a surgical treatment.

Coupling SEM-EDS and confocal Raman-in-SEM imaging: A new method for identification and 3D morphology of asbestos-like fibers in a mineral matrix.

Asbestos consists in natural minerals crystallized in a specific habit and possessing in particular properties. In the case of Naturally Occurring Asbestos, usual methods applied to the identification of mineral fibers and the determination of their possible asbestiform nature seems not efficient, especially in the case of mineral fibers included in mineral matrix. We present a new in-situ method based on the use of confocal Raman-in-SEM imaging implemented in a Scanning Electron Microscope as an efficient method for in-situ mineralogy.

Long-term hospital mortality due to small bowel obstruction after major colorectal surgery in a national cohort database.

Purpose: Adhesions following major colorectal surgery can be responsible for bowel obstruction, mostly occurring in the small intestine. Published data for long-term survival following major colorectal surgery complicated with intestinal obstruction are limited. The aim of this study was to identify the mortality rates and mortality risk factors in patients with primary colorectal surgery (PMCS) complicated with surgical small bowel obstruction (SBO).

Considerations for Pursuing Multiple Session Forensic Interviews in Child Sexual Abuse Investigations.

Multiple session forensic interviews (MSFI) are a useful tool in the field of child sexual abuse forensic interviewing given the complexity of disclosures and the variety of child-centered needs observed in practice. This paper focuses on the Children's Advocacy Centers of Texas (CACTX) model for conducting MSFIs, illustrated by a description of the statewide training models offered to member centers and enumeration of the MSFI protocol guidelines implemented by one center. A brief history and review of the single session forensic interview (SSFI) is provided followed by considerations for MSFIs in order to establish the development of current and new practices.

Searching for Truth: The Forensic Interviewer's Use of an Assessment Approach While Conducting Child Sexual Abuse Interviews.

This study examined the assessment approach interviewers use while conducting interviews to assess truth as narratives are gathered in children's disclosure statements by examining 100 forensic interviews completed at a Children's Advocacy Center. A descriptive review was used to examine the steps engaged by interviewers as they followed a protocol and content analysis was used to identify interviewers' questioning strategies as they assessed children's disclosure narratives during interviews. Findings indicate that interviewers apply a protocol in order to support advancing to a phase of eliciting details in children's narratives.

Legal decision-making in child sexual abuse investigations: A mixed-methods study of factors that influence prosecution.

Prosecution of child sexual abuse cases is an important aspect of a community's response for holding perpetrators accountable and protecting children. Differences in charging rates across jurisdictions may reflect considerations made in prosecutors' decision-making process. This mixed-methods, multiphase study used data from a Children's Advocacy Center in a suburban county in the Southern United States to explore the factors associated with child sexual abuse cases that are accepted for prosecution and the process followed by prosecutors.

Three-stage folded forehead flap for nasal reconstruction: Objective and subjective measurements of aesthetic and functional outcomes.

Background: The three-stage folded forehead flap (FFF) proved to be a simple and readily available method of lining replacement. To date, no clinical trial has evaluated the outcomes of the FFF on the nose shape and function.

Methods: Patients undergoing a full-thickness unilateral alar reconstruction with a forehead flap between January of 2010 and December of 2015 were included for analysis.

Extended Synaptotagmin 1 Interacts with Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Glycoprotein M and Negatively Modulates Virus-Induced Membrane Fusion.

Enveloped viruses typically encode their own fusion machinery to enter cells. Herpesviruses are unusual, as they fuse with a number of cellular compartments throughout their life cycles. As uncontrolled fusion of the host membranes should be avoided in these events, tight regulation of the viral fusion machinery is critical.

Should we consider the hemi-tip as a proper aesthetic subunit in a nasal reconstruction?

Background: Defects involving several aesthetic subunits (ASUs) or lying at the junction of an ASU are challenging and require a complex reconstruction. This study aimed to describe the hemi-tip as a new ASU.

Material And Methods: We conducted a retrospective study including patients who underwent a nasal reconstruction for lower nasal pyramid defects according to our modified ASU principle.

Quantitative Evaluation of Protein Heterogeneity within Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Particles.

Several virulence genes have been identified thus far in the herpes simplex virus 1 genome. It is also generally accepted that protein heterogeneity among virions further impacts viral fitness. However, linking this variability directly with infectivity has been challenging at the individual viral particle level.

Impact of Repeated Questioning on Interviewers: Learning From a Forensic Interview Training Project.

Forensic interviewers have a difficult job with high risk for career burnout and secondary trauma. Few studies have addressed how new forensic interviewers or trainees experience repeated questioning and multiple interviews. This study simulated the process of training new forensic interviewers through the creation of two interview videos in which social work graduate students participated as actors portraying the roles of interviewer and child.

Subcellular trafficking and functional importance of herpes simplex virus type 1 glycoprotein M domains.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) glycoprotein M (gM/UL10) is a 473 aa type III transmembrane protein that resides in various membrane compartments. HSV-1 gM contains several putative trafficking motifs, but their functional relevance remains to be elucidated. We show here that transiently expressed gM 19–343 was sufficient for transport to the trans-Golgi network (TGN), whilst gM 133–473, where the first two transmembrane domains were deleted, and gM 1–342, which lacked the final residue of the last transmembrane domain, were retained in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), indicating that all transmembrane domains are required for proper folding and ER exit.

A multicentre, randomised, controlled trial to assess the safety, ease of use, and reliability of hyaluronic acid/carboxymethylcellulose powder adhesion barrier versus no barrier in colorectal laparoscopic surgery.

Background: Intra-peritoneal adhesions are frequent following abdominal surgery and are the most common cause of small bowel obstructions. A hyaluronic acid/carboxymethylcellulose (HA/CMC) film adhesion barrier has been shown to reduce adhesion formation in abdominal surgery. An HA/CMC powder formulation was developed for application during laparoscopic procedures.

[Surgical approaches in rhinoplasty].

In the first step of rhinoplasty, the surgical approach will expose through different types of incisions and dissection planes the osteocartilaginous framework of the nasal pyramid prior to performing actions to reduce or increase the latter. This exposure can be performed by a closed approach or by an external approach--the choice depends on the type of nose and the habits of the surgeon. Far from being opposites, closed and external approaches are complementary and should be known and mastered by surgeons performing rhinoplasty.

Suture techniques are widely used and can be very useful and efficient to support the nasal tip and correct its deformities. Nevertheless, they are so powerful that they have to be performed very precisely if the surgeon does not want to create cosmetics as well as functional problems.
