News event monitoring systems allow real-time monitoring of a large number of events reported in the news, including the urgent and critical events comprising the so-called hard news. These systems heavily rely on natural language processing (NLP) to perform automatic event extraction at scale. While state-of-the-art event extraction models are readily available, integrating them into a news event monitoring system is not as straightforward as it seems due to practical issues related to model selection, robustness, and scale.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate serum levels of galectin-3 (Gal-3) and N-terminal pro-brain Natriuretic Peptide (NT-proBNP) in patients with stable obstructive coronary artery disease, as well as their potential to predict clinical outcomes.

Methods: This was a single-center cross-sectional cohort study. 168 patients were divided into three groups: percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) group (N 64), coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) group (N 57), and group with no coronary stenosis (N 47).

Aortic stenosis (AS) is a common valve disease and atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, frequently associated with AS. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of AF on mortality in patients with moderate and severe AS. We retrospectively analyzed 1070 consecutive moderate and severe AS patients (57% were male, age was 69 ± 10, severe AS 22.

: Coronary microvascular dysfunction is associated with adverse prognosis after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). We aimed to compare the invasive, Doppler wire-based coronary flow reserve (CFR) with the non-invasive transthoracic Doppler echocardiography (TTDE)-derived CFR, and their ability to predict infarct size. : We included 36 patients with invasive Doppler wire assessment on days 3-7 after STEMI treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), of which TTDE-derived CFR was measured in 47 vessels (29 patients) within 6 h of the invasive Doppler.

Introduction: The presence of severe arterial calcification is associated with less favorable outcomes in terms of procedural and clinical success as well as higher rates of major adverse limb events. Recent studies incorporating rotational atherectomy for effective preparation of severely calcified lesions demonstrate beneficial procedural outcomes by obtaining maximal luminal gain and improved long-term outcomes.

Methods: This prospective single-center, observational study includes patients with severely calcified femoropopliteal lesions with chronic limb ischemia Rutherford 1-5 between January 2017 and July 2019, who underwent atherectomy using the Jetstream Atherectomy system, followed by drug-coated balloon angioplasty.

Although the widespread adoption of timely invasive reperfusion strategies over the last two decades has significantly improved the prognosis of patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), up to half of patients after angiographically successful primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) still have signs of inadequate reperfusion at the level of coronary microcirculation. This phenomenon, termed coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD), has been associated with impaired prognosis. The aim of the present review is to describe the collected evidence on the occurrence of CMD following primary PCI, means of assessment and its association with the infarct size and clinical outcomes.

Infective endocarditis (IE) poses a large diagnostic and therapeutical challenge. An early diagnosis is necessary for a positive outcome. Echocardiography is initial diagnostic method when there is a possibility of IE presence.

The glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor links over 150 proteins to the cell surface and is present on every cell type. Many of these proteins play crucial roles in neuronal development and function. Mutations in 18 of the 29 genes implicated in the biosynthesis of the GPI anchor have been identified as the cause of GPI biosynthesis deficiencies (GPIBDs) in humans.

Purpose: Phenotype information is crucial for the interpretation of genomic variants. So far it has only been accessible for bioinformatics workflows after encoding into clinical terms by expert dysmorphologists.

Methods: Here, we introduce an approach driven by artificial intelligence that uses portrait photographs for the interpretation of clinical exome data.

Purpose: To provide a detailed electroclinical description and expand the phenotype of PIGT-CDG, to perform genotype-phenotype correlation, and to investigate the onset and severity of the epilepsy associated with the different genetic subtypes of this rare disorder. Furthermore, to use computer-assisted facial gestalt analysis in PIGT-CDG and to the compare findings with other glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor deficiencies.

Methods: We evaluated 13 children from eight unrelated families with homozygous or compound heterozygous pathogenic variants in PIGT.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights the use of machine-learning algorithms to identify genetic disorders by analyzing facial photographs, revealing potential applications beyond known phenotypes.
  • Researchers identified two individuals with a novel genetic disorder linked to a specific mutation in the LEMD2 gene, displaying similar progeria-like facial features and unique physical and neurological anomalies.
  • The findings suggest that artificial intelligence can aid in discovering new genetic disorders by clustering similar syndromes, indicating a common genetic cause, while also noting that the prognosis for this condition is better than classic Hutchinson-Gilford progeria.

Aims: The aim of this research was to determine the hepatoprotective effects of anthocyanins from bilberry extract in rats exposed to carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) by monitoring the parameters of oxidative stress and apoptosis, and by performing the histopathological and morphometric analyses.

Main Methods: Animals were divided into four groups: Group I (0.9% NaCl-10days), Group II (bilberry extract, 75mg/kg-10days), Group III (0,9% NaCl-9days, and on the tenth day CCl4-2ml/kg), Group IV (bilberry extract, 75mg/kg-10days and on the tenth day CCl4-2ml/kg).

Background: Peak oxygen uptake (pVO2) is used for risk stratification in chronic heart failure (CHF), but little is known about the prognostic impact of pVO2-changes in patients on chronic beta-blocker (BBL) therapy. We therefore prospectively evaluated individual pVO2-changes at a 6-month interval in patients all receiving BBL.

Methods: 194 patients with stable CHF on stable medication were included (V1) and underwent clinical evaluation and exercise testing.
